Discovered my 172 is an Import

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

I think it only showed one line of data and that was total mileage. Is the button for it on the end of the righthand stalk? In one of the pics I can see what looks like either a "i" or a "!" ?

My mate has a 2002 52 Reg 172 Import (Netherlands is think) and it has no Trip Computer.

I've never heard of MKII 172's being sold without a trip computer before. As far as I knew they were standard.

Like he said. the button on the end of the stalk cycles through MPG, Miles left in the tank, trip and miles since fill up. You wont miss it if you dont have it

Ah well all that remains is to wait till Saturday and actually collect it :)

Window chip has now been fixed, I'll be interested to see how good a job injecting the chip has actually done.

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

The accessories belt should be replaced every 36k miles.
The timing belt should be changed every 72k miles.

My 36k service cost ~£300 + ~£200 for 2 new front discs and pads and the accessories belt should have cost another £200 approx. After a series of errors on their part and two conversations with the customer services manager they did the accessories belt for nothing.

Someone said the map light appears on the driver's side on an import. My car is a UK car and it has the map reading light on the driver's side.

There are two things to be aware of when buying an imported car:
1)Resale value is less than a UK car, justified or not, this is just the way it is. (Although you should be paying less for it in the first place)
2)Main Renault dealers will know it's an import whenever you need work doing and may be less eager to give any concessions on their part.

I havent but if you dont press the button on the end of the wiper stalk then you wont have noticed it and it will have just displayed the mileage.

Pressing the button and the trip computer cycles through trip counter, average speed, mpg, miles left in tank, 2nd trip counter, petrol used in gallons

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

I wouldn't worry about it being an import, as long as you like it and it drives well then thats the main thing. As whats already been said usually imports are cheaper to buy but you get less for them when you sell, swings and roundabouts really. At the end of the day they are the same car made in the same factory, I really dont understand people (especially insurance companies) attitude towards them

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

I think insurance companies are differentiating between imorts and UK cars less nowadays. Importing is now quite a mainstream thing in response to high UK prices, but maybe 5 or more years ago an insurer had to differentiate more. A lot of imported cars nowadays are the same as UK cars but this has not always been the case, hence the need to tell them apart.

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

I bought my brand new import from motorpoint at £10,999. I know that when I come to sell it, I will be selling it at its book price whether its an import or not. If I sold it to Renault they would offer me far less because it is an import. But if I sell it privately I should be able to sell it for what the cars worth whether import or not, I know this because when we sold the 182 on,we sold it at the book price it was worth and because the private buyer was happy with the deal he took it. He wasnt bothered as long as it was a full UK spec car.

End Result, You Pay less for a import (UK Spec) and when you come to sell its hardly gonna effect the value,if it does only by a few hundred quid, your quids up at the end of the day.

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

**UPDATE**

Finally collected the car tonight just before closing time at the dealership. Unfortunately in the rush to get things signed and checking out some other details I completely forgot to double check that the car was indeed full UK spec as assured by the salesman earlier this week. It was only after having left the garage that I remembered. On checking guess what? No locking wheel nuts, window etchings or alarm. To say I'm annoyed is an understatement. I'll be back to them first thing tomorrow morning as the salesman has clearly lied regarding the car meeting UK spec. Any advice on how best to handle this?

Obviously the most important thing for me is to have a Cat1 alarm fitted. They can either install this for me or cover the cost of £250 for me to have this fitted.

Thanks

P.S. The car itself is excellent.

Guy, when did you buy yourself a Clio?

got a 182 end of june.

as regards the import.. go back ASAP and explain that you was told the cr was full UK spec car when its infact and import.. point out all the facts i.e. no alarm locking wheel nuts window etchings.
try blagging about 500 quid back.

surely garages have to comply with the normal retail rules.

imports will be harder to sell as if you tell people its an import.. alot will be put off, no difference between the cars really if it has an alarm and wheel nuts added to it, but just the fear of ''import''

try throwing that into the works too.

trades descriptions act, theow that in too

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

I'll be sure and mention the Trade Descriptions Act as they are clearly in breach of this due to the false information they have given to me. I can see them trying to get away with it but if so then I'll seek legal advice.

I'll be perfectly happy to keep the car so long as they it upto UK spec.

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

ffs, you have spent 2 wks going on about this car & asking for advise & then you collected in a hurry & forgot all about the checks. Do people ever learn?

I hope that you get it sorted mate but you would have been in a much better position before you handed your hard earned over.

From what i've read on here , the alarms fitted by Renault aren't that good , things always goin' wrong with em , plus somebody correct me if i'm wrong you only get an 18 month warranty with the renault alarms .
I've just had an aftermarket alarm fitted by a guy i've used before . He's Toad and Clifford approved plus you get a "lifetime " warranty with the alarm .
He drove all the way from Milton Keyes to Darwen , Lancashire on Friday , fitted a Toad A850T Cat 1 which works with the original plip and immobiliser .

£300 with an optional glass breakage sensor .

Heres his number anyway .Hes called Dennis . ( Caralarmwarehouse )

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

To be fair Simon I only spent 5 days asking for advice :D Hehe

No I realise that I was a fool yesterday, my mind was unfortunately elsewhere when I collected the car and I'm now regretting not having performed all of the checks I'd planned to do. Stupidly I believed the dealer when they said the car had all 3 items which would make it full UK spec.

From all I've read I'm covered by law but I'll find out more when I go in to see them today.

I'd be happy to get a alarm fitted elsewhere so long as they pay the cost for doing so (£250 for a Toad Cat1)

Thanks for the info MrBillyUK

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

Unless you get a clio that was registered in CYPRUS, any of the other imports are all UK spec- (trim, spec etc). I got a signum aftermarket fitted at motorpoint £400.00 sorted & better than the Renault alarms!

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

i think you should be able to get 500 quid back to cover getting an alarm fitted, buying some locking wheel nuts, and the inconvenience of them lying to you..

Not true! Mine was initially registered in France (Paris) - and I know location100% - and isn't UK spec: nae alarm, wheelnuts or etching. Cyprus cars do differ from other imports as they don't have the 3-year warranty that other imports/UK cars do AFAIK.

Sneeks, understandable that your mind was elsewhere - I remember the excitement picking mine up from the garage... :D . Anyway, deffo get them to pay for an alarm/wheelnuts/etching as a minimum - they've told you it's a UK car so it should bloody well be one. I bought an etching kit online, I'll try and dig out the web address when I'm home for you if you want - cost about £25 IIRC.

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

you only have to tell the insurance compay if it is a jap import or american etc - they are not interested if it is imported from anywhere in the E.U (as long as it is right hand drive) I used to work for the A.A and european mports are never a problem for insuarnce

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

Thanks for the replies :) The etching info would be great if you can remember the web address.
Spoke with the garage today and they'll contact me tomorrow lunchtime to discuss what will or will not do.

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

I thought I better lift the spirits of this thread by telling you all that the car is excellent :) Really happy with the performance of it, even while driving slowly and changing gears early it still feels fast. Plenty of pull low down the rev range which is completely different from other cars I've owned. Hopefully sort out the alarm problem with the garage asap and all will be great.

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

I've lost it with this thread, it was confirmed to be UK Spec, then it wasn't, then it was.. now you've picked it up and it isn't! I think you'll struggle under law to make the garage pay for anything, now you've handed your cash over and collected the car it would appear that a binding contract has effectively been wrapped up. The only way a garage will pay for an alarm is out of 'good faith'. Enjoy it anyway!

Re: Discovered my 172 is a Import

Sh*t sorry I forgot to look - I've set a reminder on my mobby so should remember and look for the address again tonight!

Glad you're enjoying it though. Don't tell anyone but the imports are faster ;) And the blue ones are fastest of all

I chatted with Trading Standards this morning and they say I'm fully covered by law (Sale of Goods Act). The garage have 3 options (I am able to demand any of these 3).

1. Bring the car to UK Spec
2. Replace the car like for like but with a UK model and not an import
3. Refund me the full amount

I'm to contact Trading Standards to arrange legal action if the garage refuse to do anything.

If they specifically stated that the car was UK Spec, then yes I agree they have to reimburse, or bring the car upto UK Spec standards. If they didn't state that it was UK Spec, then you wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Which is why you have to double check all these things when you pick the car up.
Hope they sort it all out for you anyway!

I have paperwork from them which states the car is not Imported when we now know it is, apparently that is enough to rule the car as not matching the description. They also told me the car was full UK spec. I'll report back how I get on.

  Citroen DS3 DSport
The garage have contacted me, they will provide locking wheel nuts and the window etchings but will not install a alarm for me. Rather than do that they have offered me a full refund and a return of my original car.
