Do i get a Clio 182 OR 197?

thanks for all the feedback guys. im going for a test drive in 1 friday and hopefully that will make my mind up lol.

I was in the same boat a few months ago, couldn’t decide on a high spec 182 or a bog standard 197.. I ended up buying a 2005 182 with cup packs, recaros, xenons had the belts redone by a specialist and with the money i saved, paid for my insurance in full (costing alot being 20).. im pretty happy with my decision in the end as it was the most sensible option with me starting uni in September. Only real let down on the 182 is the horrible gear change, when i test drove a 197 it was so much more crisp and positive... although i have a shift upgrade kit ordered from yanoo so hopefully that should make the 182 perfect! Occasionally when i see a nice 197 about, it makes me have regrets... I just put my right foot down and that seems to make me happy again ;)

197. Been through the same thing before I got mine a month ago and ended up with a very well specced 197 for around your figure. It is an earlier reg though and is due it's belts early next year.
I've averaged 30mpg over the last 250 miles. This is my commuting mpg as well :)

I've just been in a similar position bud, it was either a really nice 172 or a 182 that needed work.

I went for the 172 and don't regret it :)

30mpg isn't what it used to be at 145p/l for V-Power :(

Either you had a very heavy right, did more around town driving than fast a/m road driving or that's complete rubbish then.

I have been doing 250 miles minimum a week for 7 weeks now and have managed 380 to the tank every time using Ultima.

hi all, i went for the test drive...................... i loved the car! awesome handling. Couple of stone chips but that was it. Wheels could do with a refurb really tho. He said if i buy it they'll service it, new mot, full valet, and give me a voucher for renault so when the belts and waterpump are due next march, ill only have to pay £150.

Do this sound like a good deal?

If you have £7.5-8K cash I would be waving under any 197 owners nose who has a sale ad.
Don't go lower than late 57 onwards to avoid older box.
Chappos car ain't sold because he sold the recaros fact!
Buy private & go in hard don't bend over at main dealers, give them a good bumming :D

There is nothing "wrong" with the gear boxes although they can be a bit clunky from 2nd to 3rd if you "smash it in"! Its not about the reg of the car (i.e pre-57) its more about when the car was manufactured. They did revise the gearbox on later models.

the price doesnt seem bad, maybe even cheap actually?

In answer to the original question, a 197 all day long. I have had both a 182 and 197 and can tell you the 197 is better. The vocal lot who say buy a 182 have mostly never driven a 197, so just ignore them.

thanks for that info alanc1000:). they emailed me today saying they will also refurb all 4 wheels aswell. They just had a 58 plate astra sri cdti 150 with 23k miles remapped for 8k. i wanted that aswell lol

I have driven both! I went for a 182 with cup packs because I like the edgy more frantic drive that you get and plus it only had 29k on the clock when I bought it, but I'm obviously a freak of nature as well :)

197 definately... RB

I faced a similar choice last year. 182 Trophy or a 197. Ended up going for the 197 and love it to bits, the mpg is poor (56 plate with the short 6th gear).

If it's a toy for the weekend then the trophy but for an everyday drive I'd say 197

Will CS197 were you on the M4/M25 today around 5.00pm? Saw a white 197 with black wheels in front of me but it turned south onto the M25 and I was going north.

Looked the nuts :D

Haha i like that BG they do look older but dated I couldn't go that far :) I see Malpas church as well I think lol

Is this a birchdown through the ages thread?

Its a like a lovers trip down memory lane..

They are all hero spec iirc, all mine (steve fettled the cup with the Brembos when he had it)

bit of a need fest really :(

Nimbus 197 > Everything.

Without a doubt, the best looking Clio ever produced. Such an awesome colour for that car :approve:

Marv = hero.
