Dodgy HPI check.. please help

Hey all,
Was looking to view a 182 this weekend and just managed to get the reg plate and ran it thouugh a HPI check on the RAC website.
It came up with the following in the report:

* VRM recorded as a total loss by an insurance company

Plate Transfer

*
The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 11/04/2005
*
W8GGW was applied to this vehicle on 04/11/2004
o There are no interests recorded against W8GGW
*
LV04XSB was applied to this vehicle on 05/05/2004
o There are no interests recorded against LV04***

VRM not recorded as exported

VRM not recorded as scrapped by DVLA

Recorded against
VRM
Description
RENAULT CLIO RENA
Date
14/03/2006
Category
D - Vehicle damaged but repairable - the insurer decided not to repair

Vehicle Condition
Condition alert
VRM recorded as a 'total loss' by insurers

Condition inspected
VRM not recorded as a repaired insurance 'total loss'

From this i can take a guess thats it's been in a accident and repaired - but i don't know how serious.
Could anyone with more knowledge please define it more.
Is it a complete avoid or what??

Thanks for reading people :)

Its been written off by an insurance company. Deemed it not financially viable to repair.

Needs to be cheap to warrant buying it. And i mean £2k off the going rate cheap!

I see its an 04 plate car, and if I were you, depending on spec (cup packs etc) and the quality of repair, i'd part with no more than £4k. TOPS!!

Aye, he's wanting £5k for it - seemed a lil fishy on 38k miles. Why can't people tell you these things :(

What sort or damage is a cat D?

depends dude. usually very very minor damage. not worth 5 k though unless its some sort of deer jag/bmw

Cat D can be a number of things, from flood damage, to fire or vandalism £4,500 would sound about right. My cars Cat C, but the annoying thing is that its mechanically in better condition than most 182s, as it's all been rebuilt with new parts.

I've only just found out this info and was going to ring him tomorrow to organise a viewing for Saturday.
The car is a '04 Arctic blue 182 on 36k
Part service
The usual mod-cons but no Xenons
decent interior
Exterior has a scuff to the back driver side rear wing (which i was to use to knock the price down)
I was going to view it tomorrow but the starter motor went on it, which has delayed things..!

Guess all it takes is a £5 HPI check to uncover these things!

If things like the starter motor have gone, and you've not even viewed it yet, I'd walk away, make sure you ask him how it's a Cat D though, and how it's been repaired. Plenty of better examples of 182s on this forum to be had though.

So it needs a good £500 spending on it as well as being a Cat D??? That car is worth no more than £3500.

It should have Xenons as standard (Artic blue was a non cup colour) and the Aux belt needed doing at 36k.

Personally i'd tell him thanks but no thanks.

depends on the car, if the condition is good and there are pre accident pictures etc i think 1000 off the going rate is good, you do need to remember it will be more difficult to resell so if your not planning on keeping it until its worth a couple of thousand then to buy a straight one.

But its not.

It needs the rear quarter painting, a new starter motor, 36k service and the Xenons put back on!

I guess that's where the cat D damage occurred

tbh i didn't read the detail, sounds like a 1/2 job, avoid imo to save hassle.

Personally, i'd leave well alone, you could end up with all sorts of trouble if the repairs have not been carried out 100%.

They'll be a better one out there somewhere for you.

This car ^^^ has been a thread topic on here before. iirc, there was a few concerns about how high it sat at the back on one side in the pictures ?

I'd do as others have said, maybe move on to find a better example.

  VW Caddy Van
I looked at that just after i got my 182, noticed how high the back sat and started to wonder about it, never noticed no xenons till now tho but it was 3am and i was shattered lol

As others have said walk away find a better one

i know this is late but did you buy the car?

this is my old car. its fucked. in 1 word. was cat d befor i got it had shody repair the o/s/f wheel sits 2cm further back than the n/s/f, who ever repaired it didnt re fit xenons & how big is the scuff on rear pannel as tbh with you. i put it in a ditch/hedge winter last year as rear shocker went off. hence scratched to f**k o/s/f bumper. ive got pics of the damge to. theers no way it can only have been a cat d unless the owner new the insurance guy. + the roof is rippled round drivers door. the guy who bought it of me knew this. were was you buying it from?

also it was damaged at rear to as rear bumper a diffrent colour. when i had it there was no problem with the rear ride height.

theres a test you can get done other than a vic test that is in more depth test check geomertery and repair work done if it passes that can loose the cat d class. from whats been said about the car id leave well alone

Think you will find that the post got picked up again because the guy who used to own the car posted in it, which to me is not a bad thing as if anyone spots this post and owns that car or is looking at buying it, they will either be pissed off or thanking their lucky stars :clown:

I understand that, but all of the folk who are still saying "don't buy it etc" are wasting their time (there are posts in here members can't see)

i just thought it would be nice to know if the guy bought it, or if anyone plans on buying it. reason for warning off is because when i found it was fucked i didnt care much about it so just got worse. had it flat out aswell on the limiter in 5th showing bout 145mph so this car has not had an easy life.
(btw i know its not big or clever to boast about that)
;)
