Does a 172 have coilover springs?

  Ex-172 owner. Now a Mini!
Just been asked the above question by my mechanic as he's never worked on one? I just said - 'dunno?!' He's gonna fit my new eibachs at weekend. So, does the 172 have coilover springs? Not quite sure what it means?!

Erm, the question he's asked makes no sense mate...

And like maz said, to ask a question like that, i wouldnt be too confident at letting him work on your car, lol!

A 172 has seperate springs and dampers. If you have a set of eibachs, he'll be removing the original springs, and putting the new ones in their place.

Coilovers are kinda all in one suspension, so the springs and dampers are one piece, and this would replace both items on the car.

He must of just been enquiring as to whether the springs were just springs and not the all in one units then... maybe?!

God knows .. if it was me I wouldnt chance it . .your asking for trouble

I've used him quite a bit on various cars, all performance jobs, and he's been fine. Always been happy with his work too. Surely just replacing 4 springs will be fine.... we'll soon see.....;)

Coilovers is a gay word used by people with modified cars. Any Macpherson strut set up is a coilover.

I think he probably was asking if it was a torsion beam rear, which it is, but it still has springs and dampers. Many mechanics ask me the same thing, thinking it is like a Mk1...

He'll just be asking if the spring is separate from the damper or part of the same assembly.

Tell him rear is separate, but the front is a coilover.

It'll be fine.

So, would he have to adjust the torsion bar too? Or will the springs being replaced be enough? I remember a Saxo I had years ago had the torsions bar altered when being lowered but that didn't have springs at the rear I don't think?

nope its just a straight forward job of removing two bolts on the rear so the rear beam drops down, then the springs just fall out, put the end caps on the new ones and fit them straight in, jack the beam up and put the bolts back in, it only takes a couple of mins.....the front ones take a bit longer but its not a hard job.

Nope, torsion bar instead of rear springs. The Mk1 Clio utilizes a rear torsion bar.
