So the saga with the non working finger tip controls continues. I've pulled all the plastic surrounds out to try and follow the wiring for the volume stalk.

There are 6 wires coming out of the steering colum >

Is it the yellow plug thats for this? As there is only 5 wires into it at the head unit side??

Also, this black cable going into the black plug has another smaller black wire soldered onto it? That can't be right is it???

The black wire is an earth. Looks like someones soldered another cable onto it.
Shouldn't effect anything

It just doesn't look cricket - that said. I know this has been messed with in the past (the wiring).

Its just really doing my tits in as to why it doesn't work!

It is mate yes (i've replaced the haed unit to eliminate a fault with that) and its still the same?

The wires look fine ( the earth will still be ok ) when you take the head unit out is there a wire missing or severed behind it all? it's a single blue lead iirc that controls the steering control, mine has frayed so now works intermittently but will stop working altogether shortly.

Or I'd check the buttons themselves, VX ones for instance stop working as the buttons where they make contact with the switch wear out and no longer make contact.

The small yellow one a longer white one and a black one of the same length?

Theres a stray plug in behind the unit but that would have been for whatever after market s**t system was in it prior to the guy i bought off it had!

Sounds about right - the black and white ones are power/earths etc.. and speaker cables

The yellow one is the one for the controls. I believe blue one is cd changer if you have one of those.

Sorry been checking on this, the Yellow one is for the Stalk controls, has this ever worked? previous owner might have moved something in the process, might be a patch lead tucked away in the back there and might be why it isn't working.

Right so the yellow ones is the controls!

Should there be the same amount of wires into the head unit side as there is at the control side?? Because there are only 5 at the head
unit side and 6 at the control side (as in the picture)?

Head unit will have in total quite a lot dude, 8 for the speakers, 1 constant power, 1 back up power, earth lead and then the steering control and changer unit. the stalk controls are a separate lead though to the rest of the leads, is there a separate yellow lead not in the plug, in the main loom the yellow one there is the battery back up.

I'm getting confused now!

See the yellow plug on its own, as above it has 6 wires coming from the side that plugs into the finger tip control side however on the other side (that plugs into the head unit) it only has 5 wires? Is that correct? Sorry if i sound daft i'm not great with electrics.

Appreciate your help though!

Ahh right ok.

Well you've got two options mate - either the stalk itself has stopped working. Mines in the garage so I can chuck it in a jiffy bag and send it to you unless you've got another you could try. I do however doubt that as I've taken one apart and it's just a contact switch.

More likely there might be a break in the wiring somewhere.
Only way to test that really is to get a voltmeter - and do a continuity test from the pin on the stalk connector to the pin on the radio connector.

I had mine connected an alpine head unit in the glovebox but one of the volume things stopped working - it would only go up and not down again (LOL) so I binned it. But it was after I'd chopped a lot of wiring out and I suspect I disturbed something.

I have another stalk mate and that doesn't work either so i reckon its a wire issue. I gather to actually see the whole length of wire its a dash off job?

I think i just want to fix it it's not even about using it anymore LOL.

Thanks by the way Phil - appreciate your help!

It's not a whole dash off job as far as I remember mate - just the top half off.
Which IMO is very easy. There's a guide somewhere but basically pop your two plastic trim bits off (the blue cup trims)

Undo the 4 T20 torx screws behind them.
Pop the top off the steering column cover
Undo the 2 T20 torx screws behind that.
There's 3 T20 torx screws in the vents near the windscreen - remove them
Then open both doors, pull the rubber door seals away along the A pillar cover - pull the cover away at the top and press the little clip in - then the cover will come off on both sides.
One more little torx plastic screw going into each side of the dash top - remove those

Then you grab the dash top and pull towards you (sitting in the seat) then up - it slides out the door.

I think that harness bit actually runs from the steering column up to where the clock is and then down to the stereo.
You should be able to get to the whole thing through there.

you sure you got the right HU type? there are 2 versions; one works with a Renault proprietary system and the other works on a CAN bus. Both use the yellow plug.
