Don't know what to do...

  Tungy
Right. I posted some pics of my valver a week or two back as it was getting near to roadworthy condition. By last friday I was back driving it and everything seemed to be going well, although I do know that there is an oil leak frm the engine. Then driving about on sunday evening I start to hear a whining from the gearbox, getting louder and ranging from gear to gear. So I take it steadily back home. Dad had it on the ramps this week and theres a hole in the bottom of the gearbox now :(.

What do I do? Sensible choice would be to try and sell on/break for parts. But after 6 months of hard work on the thing I've become really attached and really have no interest in spending a lot of money (which I don't really have) on getting a more practical car. However, I would at least need a new gearbox (well second hand) maybe a new engine, need to get it resprayed still (Mates dad is soing it dirt cheap) and all manner of little bits and bobs. So shall I carry on and just slowly try and make the car as close to 'mint' as possible or should I take the safe bet and do what I really don't want to do... Break the car :(

Sorry for such a stupid thread. But I really need some opinions from a clio community here. It's hard trying to explain to the parents I don't want to buy a boring car and I'm still really attached to the clio.

If you've spent all that time on it, it would be a real shame to wash your hands of it, i'd personally keep going and don't lose hope. But then again, thats why i'm always skint, my heart rules my head! lol!

Put some more pics of it up, before during and after sort of pics!

Rock and a hard place Brad.

Where do you stop?

New engine, gearbox and respray won't be for nothing.

Then what?

Why don't you give it a minor cosmetic makeover, get it to run reasoably well (in a sawdust in the gearbox way) and trade it for something with a better medical prognosis?

Yeah I see your points. I feel like we've gone too far to turn back now, but I really don't know what to do. Thinking about sourcing a second hand 16v gearbox and just fitting that for the time being and hope it holds...

As you said second hand engienand box arn't that much drop them in and see whats up with your old one might just need new gasgets so fix it cheap and kep it for/if the other engine has a problem.

get rid mate i had a 19 16V a couple of years ago which i really liked but needed a part engine build which i had and before that new brakes but then had to sell before something else broke and sold it for less than i had spent in the previous 2 months, think i was about £300 down
Now enjoying warranty covered motoring

Tempted to whack in a second hand gearbox and chance that. However, if I go down the route of buying another car what could I get for say £4k? I'm only 18/19 so I don't want anything over about an insurance group of say 14. Want something with a bit of pace but reliable too would be good. Thinking Peugeot 106 gti, golf mk2 gti, erm.....

i'd go for a second hand gearbox and put the car in last chance saloon, and if anything else goes i'd consider splitting it. seems a waste to get rid of it tbh.

for 4k you've got a massive choice of cars so its really a decision of how sensible you want your other car to be.

Cheers middo! Gonna get a runabout for the time being. Saw a couple of £06 1.9 turbo diesels in the paper but I rang and both had already sold. And the perhaps stick a second hand gearbox in the valver and see how things go.
