door scum

hi,
i've discovered a layer of what can only be described as scum on the interior door handle. At first i thought it was the plastic going all funny but i gave it a scrape with my nail and it came off a bit!

can any1 think of some cleaning fuid that would get it off but no mess the plastic up??
