Depends on the paint colour.

Flat colours such as Red and Blacks for example don't need lacquer i they are a single stage paint.. Metallic Colours do.

simple answer is......read the instruction of whatever you sprayed it with, if it says apply lacquer then do it

odds on it says you need to use lacquer

Metallic Paints are painted in 2 parts, the metallic base coat and then a clear lacquer to give it gloss.

Solid colours can be painted as above with a base coat and then a clearcoat lacquer.

They also can be painted in a soild single stage colour that is stand alone and can be polished to give it a high gloss without the need for lacquer.

are they the paints that have been discontinued/made illegal due to the toxins in them? as the paint had hardener in it already meaning they didnt technically need lacquer?

whereas modern water based paints are very soft and need lacquer to protect them against uv and scratches etc
