Droning noise coming from wheel when moving SOLVED

It's a constant droning noise, hard to explain but it's just there when travelling at 30, overpowers my Yozza when travelling at 70! Checked my wheel bolts and they're all tight. Any ideas?

Wheel bearing maybe, mine does it.

Changing mine at xmas

Bearing more than likely.

My mates rear bearings overpowered his exhaust, and that was a straight pipe from the manifold to the backbox!

As above, should be a wheel bearing.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Cheers lads. Expensive/easy fix?

Will it kill me if I keep driving for a bit?

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Usually about £33 for a non genuine item, it will need the hub to come off the car and the bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in. ( That's if it's the front, if the rear the discs come with the bearings.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

My mates were gone for about 4 months until he changed, so I guess not.

You ideally need to buy new rear discs, unless you have a bearing press as it's built into the disc.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

It sounds like it's coming from the front wheel, is that a bigger problem or the same? Clueless when it comes to new things going wrong haha.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Bigger problem I think as these aren't built into the disc.

Never had a front one go, but I think it's a garage job. I might be wrong though.

No problem, I reccomend you take the hub off the car go to the garage, pay them a tenner or something to take the old bearing out and press the new one in.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

I had a Volvo do it last week, could hear the droning but no wheel wobble. Had to loosen the hub nut to quieten it down to make sure i was right.

It was annoying lol

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

I can hear the droning, just checked all the wheels and none are wobbling when jacked up. Any ideas? Not sure which wheel it's coming from!

Rear bearing, unless you are sure which one it is, then it's worth changing both. This is the bearings I've bought in the past, just need pressing into the rear disk.

I'm fitting a new one on the O/S rear tomorrow as I torqued it up incorrectly, and it's shagged again. If left too long the wheel can pretty much fall off. it happened to f0xy on his 1.2, wheel only stayed on because it was so low, and the wheel was held in by the wing. Relatively simple job, just need a big enough socket for the hub nut. 30 or 32mm I think.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

You don't want to leave it too long, or it'll end up like this. Vid from yesterday when changing the rear disks. Pretty worrying realising it was that bad.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

I'm no expert, pretty f**king far from it in fact. But when I bought my car I had a droning noise coming from the rear which I thought might be the bearings. It actually turned out to be the cheap tyres that had worn unevenly which was the cause
of the noise. 2 new tyres (decent ones I hasten to add) and problem sorted. Although it would have new a lot cheaper had it of been the bearings!!

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Cheers for that Ron, I've got Michelins on the back that WERE on the front, so could be that. They'll need replacing soon anyway :)

I have the same happening. I'm pretty sure it's the rear that is droning. It's not mega loud yet. I jacked it up today and there was no play at all in either wheels!!

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Luckily my cousin has a tyre business so it didn't sting as much as it could have. When he jacked the car up you could see where certain bits of the tyre face were worn more than other bits (could see where dirt had stuck to the bits that were actually making contact with road) like I say would have been cheaper had it been the bearings but it's nice to have new boots all round now.

I got some money nocked off my motor when I bought it for this same reason .. Changed the tyres from budgets to toyos n the noise disappeared

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

I've had the same thing and it turned out to be the tyres too. Is the noise still there if you put the clutch in?

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

What does it mean if the noise is still there after the clutch is in? Reason I ask is that I jacked up the car and there was no wobble in the wheels. Though my noise isn't that loud or overpowering and hasn't long started.

do the wheels not turn with the clutch in then? lol if it was either a bearing or tyres it would still make a noise clutch in or not, just when the cars moving..

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

It gets louder when I'm braking/coming to a stop. Any ideas?

That's exactly when I decided to change mine, slowing at lights you could hear a 'creaking' noise from the rear.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Ever find the cause of this?

Mine is making a droning noise too, start hearing it about 40mph. Thought it was the exhaust at fist but just resealed it all and it's still there. Starting to think it's the bearings but won't be able to get the car to the garage until Monday now.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Not yet mate. Mine's the same, over 40mph and when braking to a stop you can hear a loud droning noise. My mate said it sounds nothing like a wheel bearing though so no idea what it is.

Calipers all tight? Remember f0xy's working itself loose at Cadwell. Have you given the rear wheels a good wobbl/spin with the car in the air (and the handbrake off obviously).

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Yeah, the brakes seem to slow it down a touch when I do that even though they aren't applied (seem to be sticking very slightly).

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

Got mine sorted today, was my front near side wheel bearing. All good now, although my wallets feels lighter.

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

How did you/the garage test for the wheel bearing being fooked?

Re: Droning noise coming from wheel when moving

When I phoned to book it in he suggested it was the wheel bearing from my description. Took it in and they done quick road test and confirmed the noise was coming from the front. He then got one of the guys to jack it up to check, missed what he done to test though as I was inside in the warm lol.

Guess it all comes down to experience at the end of the day...
