Dual Core or Quad Core?

  BMW e46 320 Ci Sport
Intel Dual Core 3.16ig 6mb cache 1333fsb

or

Intel Quad Core 2.4gig 8mb cache 1066FSB?

  SLK 350
Dual without doubt for home use.

Quad is still only a 'gimmick' until there's sufficient software to support it.

really? i thought for futture proofing it would be better to go for quad? i will be overlcocking them too it' just a tough decision thats all

As said I'm going for Quad Q6600, it overclocks to 3.2ghz usually and it'll be ready for when apps and games can take advantage of the extra cores.

  BMW e46 320 Ci Sport
yeah true overclocking it is something i definitely want to do, getting a zalman flower for it to be sure :)

yeh i read that already, good article. they rekon quad core though to be safe, but the only issue there is they don't take into considertation the new generation of 1333hz dual core 3.13 gig chips! typical..

I just went with the Q6600 sitting at 3.46ghz air cooled without any issues. Much rather have the quad than a dual. For instance playing UT3 it puts all 4 cores to 100% so obviously some games can make full use of the quad cores. Source engine based games can utilize them also.

Go for the quad.

As far as I can tell, the nForce 750i only supoort 8x8 in SLI, not the full 16x16 :(

I'd be getting a 780i based board In fact I think I am :) Despite those boards having some limitations, it's a necessary evil if I want SLI and Intel.

780i is all triple SLi business though which is just silly imo, i'll never use them. what you think roy? x16 speed seems like quite a big deal in SLi

Well if you're going for an nForce chipset, the only reason you'd do it over an Intel chipset is for future SLI, which you'd want full 16x16 for IMO.

don't get me started on mac rubbish! pfff i'll be paying about £700 for my setup rather than doublke that :p

Roy: true i guess. just not much room for anything else and with 3 cards, will a 750w power supply cut it :/ ?

TBH unless you're certain to be going SLI, you'd be better off with an Intel board. Not sure about the PSU, there's too many factors beyond it's box rating :)

  A blue one.

And in a years time your setup will be worth virtually nothing and the mac will still be worth a considerable proportion of the purchase price... :rasp:

an intel board? i just want one with good support for 64bit windows and one which is reliable, SLi will be good just so it's a little bit more future proof tbh.
