Dumb question about squealing brakes, yes Im stupid...

I hear people talk about brakes squealing, and some pads seem to be more notorious for it than others.

But what is it that actually makes the squeak?

Is it the pad moving in or rubbing against the caliper?

The pad rattling about as its not even

Or in the case or race pads the pads not upto operation temps so doens't work right as such.

Simply put, audiable register of high frequency vibrations.

When you rub any 2 items together, despite it feeling smooth, its technically slide/grip/stop/slide/grip/stop. If these vibrations are too large then you can get pad squeal as it vibrates against the caliper housing/piston/backing plate/disc.

Easiest way to explain is the simple knife/fork on a plate or nails on a blackboard......same thing.

Whats the best way to reduce it/get rid of it?

Thanks

Brakes only squeal for one reason. Because the pads aren't correctly installed. People can talk all they want about what makes the squealing occur. That its what happens when two surfaces are rubbed together, like a nail on a blackboard, and one's not smooth. But the fact is your brakes didn't squeal when your car was new did they? So if someone has fitted new pads and they are squealing its because they're the wrong pads or they didn't do it right. Race car's brakes squeal because they run super-hard pads that wear out the disks quickly. Bike's brakes squal because they run lightweight flimsy calipers that allow the pad to vibrate. But it simply shouldn't happen in a road car. Unless what you're talking about is the grinding noise either when you've run out of pads and the baking plat is touching the disk, or when grit has gotten between the pad and disk and gotten embedded in the pad and is being ground down. But that doesn't last long and it's not strictly squealing. Squealing is when the pad is vibrating. And if its the right pad and its properly installed it shouldn't.

Yes, noises on OEM and fast road pads should not be there, but if your running race/heavy track pads then expect it.

Im having the same problem with my DS2500 pads at the moment, they didnt do it before I used them on track.

  Black Gold with cup packs
My set up is The high Carbo Brembo Disks, Greenstuff pads, Goodrich SS hoses.
The first 500 miles my pads squeeked.... Alot.. Then it stopped, so I think wearing them in has alot to do with it

Pads tend to squeel with time as they thin out or if a slide seizes etc and the leading edge of the pads touch first.

Cheers for the replies, I asked as I'd seen Maz's thread plus I've just had new pads that don't squeal when my mate at work has had the same pads (different car though) fitted this week and they squeal :)
