Effectiveness Cup Spoiler Clio 200

Hi Folks!

Ive bought a new Clio 200 with the Optional Cup Spoiler. The Problem is that the dealer couldnt tell me if the Spoiler is affecting Aerodynamics in a positive way or if its just a Style thing (which it is hopefully not). So im wondering if any of you Guys have any Idea about that!?

I'd say it's more of a 'style thing' as the rear diffuser replaces the need for a spolier

Mainly due to the fact its an optional extra and if it made any performance enhancement it would have been put on as standard. But also because a spoiler provides downforce in order to increase handling by sticking the car to the road. Such a small spoiler would not be capable of doing this to any human noticeable size.

Because of the size im wondering. its not SO small and the sheer amount of air passing there should create quiet a amount of downforce.. but well, youre the professional

surely on a front wheel drive car spoilers and defusers do squat due to applying downforce to the rear wheels where there is no power. In high speed corners surely this reduces grip. Wouldn't bother personally mate.

looks better though doesnt it, everyone goes for the cup spoiler on the mk2 clios because they look better too. dont think many people on road or even track would tell if the wing was missing, non cup, cup or huge tbh. not on a clio anyway.

id go for, just cus it looks great

I dont think youre at this Jonny! i think they have their purpose on FWD Cars. Just think about weight ratios, most FWD Cars have more weight in the Front. On my last Car (a Nissan 100NX GTi) that was a serious problem for me. On Track you wasted your Front Wheels but at the same time the Rear Wheels looked like almost new. What means to me that i just could get a much better overall Grip if the Rear End woulve been generated more downforce so i could use the Grip reserves of the Tires at the rear more.

Bit complicated, but i think you see what i mean!?

Im talking about the thing on the top of the trunk, the rear cup spoiler, not the front wing.

A rear diffusser will not just cause an increase in downforce at the rear of the car. The diffuser is there to aid reintroducing the underbody airflow to the surrounding airflow. Making this more efficient increases the airflow under the car and causes downforce to be increased under the car as a whole.

On a hatchback where the sudden dropoff at the rear of the car causes a large area of turbulance to form due to flow separation, a rear wing will make very little difference (if any) to the cars downforce.

Would touring car teams would waste money putting rear wings on FWD race cars if they did nothing?

Seriosha - I would suggest speaking to Renault Sport, although probably the most obvious answer would be that they fit the spoiler to the clio cup cars. I'm just guessing but I would have thought it is to try and stabilise the grip at the rear end due to the fact there is almost no weight over the rear wheels, which makes for very 'tail happy' handling without a spoiler to give some downforce. I'm guessing that the rear diffuser is there to control the airflow underneath the vehicle.

Not just cosmetic. Spoiler was developed for the Clio Cup race cars. Only an optional extra as it splits opinions on style and was not needed on the road car. According ot the head of RenaultSport in the UK the only difference between Race Car and Road car is that the race car bolts from the outside for easy replacement, and the road car bolts from inside the bootlid for security.

Not to question your knowledge as I have none at all, but it looks quite a lot bigger than the one Audi added to the original TT on recall to stop them all flying off the roads? :-S

Another fact for you boys!! the diffuser does feck all at the speeds we drive, and minimal at high speed, looks nice though!!!

Well, at low speeds you just dont need a diffusor or a spoiler because your car isnt much lighter due to little airflow. So thats OK, at high speed its actually effective, not just al little (if its a good one). I feel those differences on cars very good (Remind that im German and do "high speed" probably some mor often so i get the difference
