engine bay relays/ overheating/ no fan!! :(

  renault clio 1.4 si 2000
hi guys, i'm havin problems with my mk2 ph1 overheating. i've bought a new temp sensor from renault, and that didn't solve it, there's no air in the coolant system, the fan runs when u unplug the sensor, and the rad pipes get hot, so i'm assuming the thermostat's ok. there's no warning lights or fault codes. the fan doesn't cut in till the gauge goes over half way, and it doesn't remain on when you switch the car off, so it gerts too hot in traffic, and even worse, won't start after a journey till it's cooled, which without the fan can be half an hour!!!
the relay thing is because i can hear one of the relay's in the engine bay click when the fan finally comes on, and i'm wondering which it is. other than digging the wire out the loom i'm a bit stumped. a long time ago the car would intermittently fail to start, and this was traced to a faulty relay via a computer. hgowever, as a quick fix we just swapped it for another in the bay :S, and i forgot about it! however, although that was 2 years ago, i'm wonderin if that's come back to bite me!!

found a little diagram on a thread on here, :D, showing the big yellow relay is for the slower fan speed and one of the black ones for the fast. after removing each, while the engine's running, with the sensor unplugged so the fan runs, the yellow does naf all and the removing the black makes the fan stop. so i'm reckoning the yellow relay is fudged. switching the AC on doesn't bring the slow speed fan on either.
anyone technical to comment? :)
