Engine coolant top up?

Hi I'm sure this is a noob question but I've never had to do it before so better safe than sorry.

So my coolant bottle is empty and can't see the colour that's been used, can I just look in the hand book and add whatever they recommend as there's no way to know what's been used or is it bad to mix coolants and will need flushing.

Just make sure you use Type D coolant.

It's not actually a Clio so I'll have to check what type it needs.
