engine corrosion

  VX220
When cleaning the engine bay is there any product that will remove the black spots off the engine. It looks like some sort of corrosion or heat deposit.
I have tried
Rubbing compound
Tar remover
Polish
Auto glym
and all with no luck!
I dont really want to get it all polished but i just want it to look smarter.
Cheers
Chris

OK i think half the problem might be my description. Basically the engine looks corroded. The metal on the plenum and rocker look dull, and corroded. Basically i want them clean and shiny and get rid of the dull marks with out having to pay to have them polished.
Here are some pictures but im not sure they make it any clearer!

I dont know if there is anything you can dunk aluminium in to take off the oxisisation as its very hard. Best bet is probably a brass wire wheel on a drill.

I think i have one of those wire wheels so i might give it a try somewhere under the engine over. The wire wheels seem a little harsh, i would imagine that this would scratch the aluminium instead of giving a polish. Ill get down to homebase and see if they suggest anything. Maybe brasso could be a start.
Also anybody had experience with:
Meguiars NXT All Metal Polysh
New anti-corrosive technology locks in the shine. NXT All Metal Polysh cleans, polishes and protects all wheels, stainless steel exhausts, chrome air intakes and valve covers, aluminium, brass, copper, silver and all other bright-work components. Meguiar’s Microscopic Diminishing Abrasive Technology (MDAT) removes built-up oxidation, tarnishing and staining faster and safer than traditional/harsh abrasives.
does it really remove oxidation?

Sorry about my 1st reply, clay will not be any good for that corrosion.

Best bet is to rub it down with wet and dry and respray it a matt silver.

Could be done in 2 hrs

NXT Metal Polish is quite mild compared to Autosol - I doubt either would make much of an impact on that.

If you just want to clean it up but not make it shiny maybe wire wool and some metal polish would work ?

Ok so this morning i got some 600 and 400 wet and dry which really got to grips with the corrosion. I then gave it a quick go with some autosol.
I have been out to get some wire wool so once the engine cools down a little i will re-attack it. I will have to get a dremel onto the small bits as there is no way i can get wet and dry in there.
here it is so far:

600 on the right and 600/400 and autosol on the left.
Ill keep you posted

Ok so more wet and dry and more autosol with wire wool. Its getting there but until i can get a dremel then i'm fighting a loosing battle!

Yeah mine has a couple of darker bits on there too, but don't want to sand them out as will have to do the whole thing then and don't want to lose the standard "looks a bit industrial" OEM look of the CS engine!

Yeah heard thats the why, won't be bothering to do that myself though on the 172.

You got the GTi in the end then anyway mate?! :D Getting a nice detail soon I assume?!

Picked it up last night looks great until the sun shines or under lights - deep gloss BUT with loads of swirls. Got to sort them today before Combe tomorrow.

I think you should take it through the cheapest automatic carwash in town and post some before and afters to show the real damage they cause ;)
