It usually a symptom of a worn engine or gearbox mount,
usually the (lower) dogbone mount, most of us upgrade the dogbone bushes to powerflex ones,
as this normally stops the knocking.

It's not serious or expensive, but it's best to do it sooner rather than later.

An hours labour I reckon, so about £50/£60 quid,
they'll have to cut out the old bushes and press in the new ones.

As for the whine, it's hard to tell without a video of the noise.

Where in the country are you?

The knock could be from the top mount as mine is on 40k and it fell out of its own ass when I took it off.

That's a different knock all together, plus he said it only happens when he boots it and changes gear,
i've had both knocks on mine and the top mount knock happens every time you pull away, brake and turn, even at slow speeds.

Whereas the dogbone knock is more pronounced under hard acceleration and gear changes.

Whine could be aux belt related.

Do you know if the belt and tensioners have been replaced?

if aux belt hasn't been done since then, you're WAYYYYYY overdue to have it done

Sorry to jump in on your thread but my car does exactly the same. Is there a way to physically check the mounts before you replace them or is it just hit and miss? I don't really want to be changing parts if they're still in good nick.

Also mine has a whine to it aswell, sounds like a supercharger almost lol - belts are due at the very end of this year and have only done 13k miles since the last change (I have a receipt from renault for the work costing £630) ideas?

Yea that's a good way to describe the noise. Like a super charger. But it's not very loud. Think I'm Gna take the cam cover off and have a look

Do not remove the cam cover. it holds the cam in place which means they will move etc.
Could be the lower idler on the auxiliary belt

I've found it seems to get louder the faster you drive. It isn't a loud noise as such - you can't hear it over the radio for example but when nothing else is on you can hear it. My mate in his 182 Said his whines but not quite as much as my 172 - he recommended replacing the gearbox oil. Would this do any good?

Really. thats nearly as much as the car worth. not sure its worth doing as it has high milage

That's the thing about these cars mate, they may be cheap to buy but they're not cheap to run,
and if you don't keep on top of servicing and belts etc, they f*ck up quickly.

That's a good price that. How long is the offer on for? I will be wanting all mine done within the next couple months I believe. Also read all of your customer reviews and you sound like a good bloke!

why take it to a none reputable garage if you thionk there is a possibility that they are going to mess it up? Surely one of the specialists on here are localish to you?

Honestly, the advice on here falls on deaf f**king ears

Can't be hard tho. These guys are professional. I would try it myself but can't be asked. Done a few on the 1.816v. But it's my missis money and she said take it to local garage. So we will see lol if it fails. I'm getting a loan and getting Evo 8. Feed up with messing about with now

I charge £75 for a timing check and adjust.

A few things can show it, usually tell tale is tippex marks. But I had one in on Tuesday, that was down in the low 30mpg, pulled ok.

I'd reset it, on the journey to collect him, it was up at around 38mpg and pulled like a train afterwards.
