Engine oil

  172 Cup
Wanting to change the oil and filter on my 172. I've had a look and seen that I need 5.1 litres of oil. Do I really need the 0.1 litre of oil as everywhere I look sells in 5 or 1 litre bottles. Also is there any type of oil filter I need I had a look on here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/oil_filters/ and seen several.

5 litres will probably do . I only put 5 litres in mine last time and it was on the max line on the dipstick , but i didn't change the filter as it had only done 4000 miles.

If your in doubt get a genuine filter from your dealership , they are only about £8 iirc .

get a 5 litre and keep checking the dip stick. and if after you've put the whole can in its not very far up on the stick buy another 1 litre....

I got the ELF oil from the Renault dealer & it came in 1Ltr bottles, so you could get 6 of them & keep the remainder of the last bottle for topping up or your next change. it cost me £45 for the filter & 5Ltrs of oil ( I already had half a bottle for topping up) Always use a genuine filter, its only pennies more if at all.

i believe Motorworld are now selling oil by the pippette :) take a small test tube with you that will hold around 200cl and you'll not spill any on your journey home then.

I got 6 ltrs and a filter for £35 from the dealers. Was abit of an arse paying an extra £5 for 1 ltr of petrol but it'll come in handy.

4.75 ltrs is the exact amount you need. Alot of people hark on about needing 5 but the book says 4.75.

Just put roughly 4 1/2 ltrs in and then add a bit more after.
Overfilling can be worse than not putting the final 0.25 of a litre in!

^^^ 4.75 litres without changing your filter ,5.1litres if your changing your filter . Obviously as the car gets older there will be more sediment in the sump so you'll refill with slightly less . Like ya say , put in 4.5litres , check the dipstick and top up with more if needed .

I had mine changed a couple of weeks ago using only 5 litres for the change (filter done too.) The oil level was so close to the full mark that it was a waste of time putting the extra 0.1l in! ;)
