Engine replacement question(s)?

  Clio 172 Cup
Hi guys, Basically my 172 Cup broke down the other day due to sucking some debris into the engine (apparently from a dodgy cone filter) and got it back from the mechanics the other day after hed had a look and he reckons it needs a new engine.. my questions are as follows;

Would it be possible to repair the old engine as i have just paid for new belts and a few other bits and bobs, and I am told the debris has only damaged one piston.

Also, the mechanic told me that my cylinder head has been polished and ported! is this a standard thing on the 172? as dont want a replacement engine to be a downgrade! :(

I know the car isnt worth much but it is my pride and joy and I'd love to get it on the road again.

What would you do guys? (money aside) New engine? or fix the old one? Im not really bothered what it costs to fix as ive become attatched to the car!

Thanks for your help :)

suspiscious that it's happened just after the belts were done. Was it done by a specialist?

Repair depends on the damage done. if it's dropped a valve (which is sounds like to me) then it's a new engine

Im not too hot on all the technical stuff regarding engines etc but heres the story:

Basically, the dephaser pulley broke so had to get a full engine rebuilt etc, costing 740 quid, with all new belts, valves etc. - Got the car back and it drove fine then a few thousand miles later was doing a steady 40/30mph and it just died on me, I personally thought it was the timing myself, as when the dephaser went it made the exact same noise when trying to start it. Took it back to the garage that did it and he said its still timed up but it looks as if some metal has been sucked into the engine via the air filter.

Personally i think that they've fucked it up somehow and because the only thing different to the engine since it was in the garage for the belts being done is the air filter I fitted, they have just blamed it on me. Although with me not being a car expert, I don't know for sure as I don't know what I am looking at when it comes to things like this.

Who said the dephaser broke? it can't just "break" they rattle, that's as far as failure goes unless it physically explodes

I'd say thats had timning done wrong twice, damaged valves twice, and they've charged you to repair their **** up

I'd agree to be honest, Is the polished cylinder head etc. standard? Ive picked the car up from there today and its still in bits because Im in two minds what to do with it, - Sorry if I sound like a total idiot but is there a way to 'check' to see if the car is timed correctly?

Thanks :)

Edit: And the mechanic that mended it said that it broke. =\

the head is CNC ported as standard. The port work is clearly done by a machine if you have a look

Mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about. This is why specialists exist

It would be cheeper to buy the cup engine for £ 250 in the car part section and put that in
