Engine sounds odd

T

thecremeegg

In the past few days, my engine is starting to make what can only be described as a constant muffled boom that occurs at 40 and fades until i hit 60 and it returns, but louder....it doesnt matter what gear i'm in, it still does it.

i know muffled boom isnt really a good description, but i cant think of anything else to describe it lol
i cant decide if its coming from the engine or the rear.....im hoping its the rear but its more likely to be the engine right?

anyone shed any light on this from my crap description?

Cheers

Get it jacked up made, spin each wheel as fast as you can by hand, listen for a grinding/crunching noise. (get a mechanic mate to help) constant says to me wheel bearings. Does it do it when the cars stationary aswell?

Does it sound like exhaust blow?

It only makes it when it gets to dead on 40 and then it quietens down after 45, then comes back louder at 60.....
is there any things to look at exhaust wise? and it doesnt sound like a wheel bearing, too bassy and whirry if u understand :S

Yeah get a mate to sit in it and rev it up (not now) and you look underneath and see if you can see it blowing anywhere. If you can hear it in the car quite loudly you should be able to find it quite quickly.
