Change the gearbox oil for something decient royal purpe is supposed to be the best but its £50 or so.
Type D Renault coolent is only cheap and its good stuff and Renault use it and recomend using it.

Type D, is that the day glow green stuff? I already have a spare 5ltrs of that in the garage.

What tools will I need?

I have socket sets, spanners sets, screwdrivers

Is there anything special needed?

Cheers Edde

Oh and I have a haynes manual GavFre, but there is usually a much quicker way or a better order of doing things etc

I would have thought you could manage with a standard tool set - can't think of anything you would especially need off the top of my head.

Yep that the fluid.
A good tool kit you'll need some sort of jack/crane to get the engine out unless you've got a good garage and 4 post lift and you could then lift the car over the engine.

Masking tape so you can label stuff up helps...I done this the other day and its pretty straight forward mate, give us a pm if you get stuck, its still quite fresh to me, lol

Nice one Dan, no doubt I will be in touch. I will be starting wednesday so be warned ;)

Edde, I was going to do it in a double garage so I can get both cars next to each other.
However, I have access to 4 post ramps.

Which is easiest? engine out the top or the bottom?

Cheers Matt.

Do i need to split gearbox & engine if dropping out the bottom?

Remove all hoses, remove all cables/wires, undo engine mounts, remove driveshafts, undo subframe = Engine drops out?

Nope with the subframes off the engine etc all drop out downwards.

Hmmmm........Is it much harder taking it out the top? I would rather do it at the inlaws in the garage rather then the up at the workshop as the workshop is a bit of a nightmare to get to.

i'd say its easyier taking it out the top, bonnet, slam pannel and lights off, radiator out, unbolt everything and heave ho

I took it out the top using a crane, but ive seen it dropped from the bottom which was a hell of a lot quicker and easier IMHO. No need to split the box either.

I took the engine out of a 16v from the bottom. I just undid the exhaust and steering, popped the driveshafts out and undid all the connections. I then unbolted the subframe and engine mounts and let that down on 2 jacks. Me and my dad then lifted the car over the engine.

Matt

Have decided to do it in the inlaws double garage while there away, am going to hire an engine crane and engine stand so I can paint the lump before it goes in.

Getting the car Tuesday night about 6pm and have booked wed/thurs/fri off of work to do the swap.
Will get plenty of pics up and if I get time I will write a detailed guide.

Do I need a hub puller and ball joint splitter as I dont have either yet?

ball joint splitter yes.

32mm socket for driveshaft hub-nuts.

Are the hub nuts the same for the rear stan? I have a rear hub nut socket but I believe its a 31mm that I had to buy when replacing my rear bearings:S may be wrong thou.

Will get ball joint splitter tomorrow then. Any particular size? will 20mm gap be fine?

Hub puller??

aye 20mm would probs do...u want a nice long wrecking/pry bar to lever the wishbones down.

dont need hub puller.

99.9% sure its 32mm

Cheers fella

I may of even bought a 32mm but for some reason I think its a 31mm.

Will check tomorrow lol

Pry bar is on my list on must buys before wednesday ;)

You may get some PM's when I get stuck and dont know where my left over nuts and bolts should be:o

My collant (proper green renault shizzle) has only been in for sub 100miles (changed it when I fitted my samco's), will it be ok to reuse it for one of the cars? or is that just being tight? lol
