engine tapping :(

Hi,
can anyone offer advice of how i can fix my motor. Its a 2000 sport 172 with 80k on the clock. The engine has just started making a tapping noise that gets faster when you rev. I have looked after it with servicing, although the oil was just getting to the low level on the stick when the noise started. Renault want £85 just to have a look at it, and im sure my local dealer is a rip off, after a £850 servicing bill.
Any help is appreciated.

got the same issue now, seems to come from under the engine cover, my oil is half full though. I've heard wrong oil maybe an issue.

yea, I had this after a hard track day in my old evo, turned out it was lack of oil to the head, making the tappets really noisy.

wrong oil grade would cause this too, whats the mileage? if its high they will be worn

my 1st car had a faulty oil light and i didnt take care of it properly, and the problem was very little oil. and it made a tapping noise which got louder with revs..the engine was shagged then. Get it checked out asap as if it is oil it could be a massive issue

My 172 cup has only done 56k and nearly 5 years old. Just checked the garage history as i've only owned the car about 8 months and the oil was replaced not by a renault garage so may have wrong grade oil in. It always has sounded like a diesel lol but the oil is half full on the old dipstick.

  meriva vxr! really ;-)
sounds like tappets to me, old 205gti used to have the same sound - i switched to using castrol magnetec as apparently it coats everything offering more protection and engine quitened right down - feel free to listen to anyone with sound mechanical knowledge over me though ;)

How much am i looking at for a tappet problem? is that an engine stripping?

You could do it yourself if you know the clearances and have got a tappet guage? Save money!

They're hydraulic tappets hence why they can be effected by low oil, they pump up with oil pressure hence why the engine sounds tappety when you start it after standing for a while then it dies down after 10 secs or so. After starting with low oil its either the tappets or worse (bottom ends), tappets won't be cheap if they need to be replaced I imagine.

Am I not right in saying they are hydraulic lifters not mechanical so can't be adjusted? Can buy a new set though, not too expensive I wouldn't have thought?
