Engine troubles from a 172

I was driving down an B road quite fast and then I noticed a rattle, didn't think anything of it at the time but I think something may of snapped or broken off

Everytime I rev over 2-2. K rpm I can hear a distinctive rattle
It's gerrting me worried so I drove back like a mini cab driver- 35mph in 5th
It rattles in neutral so I don't think it's a gearbox issue

I always check oil levels on any journey and they were all fine , before and after

Any ideas anyone?

While im driving it sounds like it's near the air box but low down
But with the bonnet up and someone revving, it sounds like on the drivers side to the left of the engine, close to the mount

There is one visibly pulley to the far left, near the front
Ive checked this and it is tight and not damaged in any way
I don't know if that is the dephaser tho
All belts were done less than 5k ago

Also, as soon as the rattle developed, the car went Into a stall
The red battery light came on and i had to restart the car

dephaser! they have nasty habit of going just after cam belt done. mine is in drive waiting for me to get round to doing it. sounds like engine buggered but if you rev it over 4 grand it mostly goes. you will need to replace cam belt again but not pulleys if they were done last time

Is it suppose to lose power when the dephaser goes?

Ive been told that the car sounds like chitty chitty bang bang from outside

As far as I know, the dephaser is just noisy. Won't alter performance at all.

I'd get that looked at pronto mate. Sounds noisy for a dephaser although could be just your camera but your other symptoms dont match up with a typical worn dephaser issue...

Im at work today but a local mechanic had a quick look and thinks the cam shafts has problems and also requires tappets

What are the symptoms of cam shaft problems?

What's the Main reasons an engine blows up, lack of oil?

I always check oil at least once a week and there has been no change in oil level in the past 2 months or after this noise started

Tappets usually sound like a diesel but mine sounds like a machine gun, but I can also still hear the engine revving normally

The looks I was getting while nursing it home were cringe worthy

Have a search for dephaser mate and see if any of the vids match yours. If its coming from the top end chances are its just the dephaser but its strange to get other symptoms too? and sure a dephaser issue is over a period of time not BANG problem sort of thing.

You really dont want to be replacing lifters and followers if you can help it. For a set of lifters and followers new from Renault your talking 600 quid area before fitting.

Roller rockers are £65 + VAT each. x 16 = £1222 if my head maths are correct!

It will be a de-phaser (inlet pulley)

please do not spend money on removing the cams etc, buy a pulley and get someone with the correct timing tools to fit it all!

If you're in the Midlands N/W take it to Fred (BTM) or Birchdown only, they'll see you right :)

I'm near ilford, Essex

Just out of paranoia , does anyone know of issues with dropped valves on these f4r engines?
Would an engine management light come on

21 quid each when i checked with Renault last year. Lifters where roughly the same price each

Sounds like dephaser. It should be obvious when you get the belts off (admittedly not a quick/ cheap diagnosis).

When my belt jumped a crank pulley tooth the noise was more mettalc with the valves being flattened by the pistons. I recon that was 18 degrees missaligned.

You tube clip sounds more tapperty but if the timing has slipped a little whats to stop it going further?
