European Tour in the M5

  BMW M5 & E36
Blatantly copied over from my progress type thread, thought it might be of interest to others who don't follow :)

The 19th of June was a quick trip down to Le Mans, for the annual 24h endurance race. If you've not heard of it, please delete yourself from the internet.

Had a nice steady run down to Folkestone for the tunnel, leaving mine at 2.30am, nice and early! First time on the tunnel for me and I was quite impressed, much slicker operation than the usual dover/calais ferry. On the other side it was a sensible run down to LM in a 5 car convoy, sat with the cruise on most of the way and returning a very suprising 27mpg over the 500odd miles!

Le Mans was enjoyable as ever, this was my third year on the trot. We took a lot less with us this year compared to last year as a 3000 mile Eurotrip was on the cards straight after.

We left soon after the race ended on Sunday afternoon and the trip ended up something like follows:

Le Mans > Auxerre
Auxerre > Marseille
Marseille > Monaco
Monaco > Imola > Milan > Branzi
Branzi> Kufstein (via Stelvio etc)
Kufstein > Munich
Munich > Nurburgring
Nurburgring > Zeebrugge
Zeebrugge > Hull
Hull > Home.

The car was an absolute joy. I was a bit dubious before the trip as I'd only done 1500 miles in the 6 months I'd owned it, then I covered double that in the 2 weeks I was away for. Not a single thing went wrong, it really did lap up the miles. It was a lovely place to be for the long driving days and the noise it made through the dozens of tunnels was just glorious! It did 165mph GPS (170mph clocks) on the Autobahn with absolute ease before the limiter had its say with 1300 revs left to play with, it would easily be capable of 180+ given the chance.

The trip totalled 2979 miles, including 7 countries, €940 of fuel and €204 of tolls. Trip consumption was 24mpg, which I'd have laughed at if anyone suggested such a figure before I left!

And finally, one of my concentration face 4 up on the 'Ring!

looks an epic trip and what a car to do it in! would love to do this sometime!

Utterly jealous.
I'm so gutted my euro trip hasn't come off this year - next year I'm all over LM and a big road trip afterwards!
That fuel economy though - WOW. I'd get 10mpg more in the Clio lol

I'm so jealous.

Get a few people together and it's a cheap way of seeing a lot of places!

Great trip fella I so want to do this! Maybe not in the Clio lol but maybe a bike or German barge!

Cheers. All about the German barges!

Cheers. Car was superb throughout. For what mine's worth, I couldn't think of many cars that'd have been better for the trip.

Lol at 4 up on the 'ring. lovely car and even better that it didn't break.

4 up was hilarious. I thought I had it on video, but the pair of noobs operating the GoPro had it on photo mode not video, so I ended up with 2 stills instead of a vid! Annoying.

Epic trip and ace car to do it in.

Thanks :)

More details on the Jap Red 1er please.

Fantastic. I'd love to have the balls to do something like this. So then...how much did it cost you in fuel? lol

  Not a 320d
Lovely motor.

I miss driving my mates dads m5 now and again. Brilliant car...... such composure for such a heavy car. Excellent engine. Always a fan of cross plane V8's too.
