exhaust emissions

there is a problem with my mates car. the exhaust emissions light is flashing and there is a loss of power. the engine soudns like its spluttering and so does the exhaust. there is also a slight eggy smell. anyone know what the problem is?

the car has "coil on plug" IE each spark plug has an individual coil pack

thanks Fred, its my car thats the problem. From renault how much roughly do they cost? is it easier to just change the whole coil pack?

you have 4 pencil coils (one per spark plug) instead of having 1 coil pack and 4 HT leads

you need to find out which one is broken (easy to do)

i can check how much when i'm at home if you send me your reg number

we sell them at work, i assume there the same as megane 1.6's?

only about £20 each i think

yeah its the same engine as the 1.6 megane. The pencil coils are easier to take out on the 1.6 than 1.2 i think so shouldnt be too bad

i had the same problem and it turned out to be the pre-cat lambda

1.2 16v though

pencil coil they cost about £36 each.

just been out and taken each of the pencil coils out one by one and started the car to see what happened. It should judder when you take one pencil coil out shouldnt it? It juddered when i took each one out but was considerably worse with one of them and the car stalled itself, so im guessing its likely to be that one?

yep - you shouldnt really drive it when its missing though its not good for the catalytic converter mine was spluttering the other day but as i havnt got a cat not really a prob!

i havent driven it, just turned it on to see how it idled thats all

just loosened them all and started the car up, then lifted them out one at a time to see what happened. The middle 2 pencil coils gave a sort of knocking noise when they were lifted out, but the outside 2 didnt make any noise...which 2 are shot?!

outside 2,

beause if the engine was on all 4 then as you disconect one, the engine is misfiring (ie the noise changes and the engine struggles)

if the engine behaves the same with a coil unhooked, then that coil is knackered

Ive just changed all 4 of the pencil coils and all the spark plugs and its still doing the same thing....what else could this be? cheers

You said you knew the 2 problematic cylinders correct?

have you changed the leads? if not I would try swapping the leads round and see if that makes a difference.

Wouldnt of thought it was the lambda but if the coils plugs and leads are deffo all okay im a bit stumped

CLIP is the badboy diags machine yeah dont know what there like personally but thats what renault dealers use to do there job for them.
