Expensive Bloody Clio!

  Renaultsport Mégane R26
Hi all,

Just a brief warning to all those in 1.2 16V Clio's which are coming up to 5 years old...

I took my 1.2 16V into Bridges Reading this morning for an MOT and Cambelt change for which I was quoted £400. Pretty expensive considering MATT BLACK quoted me a much more reasonable rate for the Cambelt (to bad he's up north and i'm down south!)

However, i've just had a call from Renault saying that the water pump is leaking like niagra falls and whilst the engine is out, it is best to do the work now otherwise it'll cost £450 in the future (they are charging me £220 to do it now).

So that's £620 on a car that I want to sell in February prior to converting to the darkside when I take delivery of my Black Megane R26 in March...

To top it all off the brake pads are 75% worn so better get them sorted too :-(

V.v.annoyed as by the end of the day I would have dished out close to £800 which as you all know is probably about a quarter the value of the car!

Watch out 1.2 16V owners, Renault are out to get you!

Find this is odd, as my local garage (french cars) did a cambelt change, new water pump, aux belt and replaced all the coolant for £410 thats on a 172 aswell

  don't
ha, taking you for a ride, do not let them do the pads, do them yourself or get a small garage to

waterpump will be easy to get to if they are already doing cambelt, should just be part cost and the labour for the coolant change,

question the costs

After hearing what you guys have to say i'll leave the pads for a small garage to do.

Anyone know how much the water pump should cost as a part (exc. labour)?

You got arse raped! I payed £300 cambelt, aux belt and water pump and all labour inclusive at a reputable local garage! I rang Renault and they were after silly money.

Dave, wherabouts are you in London? I'd be willing to travel to help todo your pads FOC depending where you are. I'd be getting your wheels off to check your pad wear mate as they can sometimes 'exagerate' the wear to 'get the work in' so to speak. :nono: Easy job aswell.

When you say they've got the engine out, have they actually taken the engine out or stripped down?

Only some dealers are out for you.
Engine out for a 1.2 cambelt? There having a laugh its a few hours work engine stay in. As Tom said coolent pumps dead easy to do when belts off.
my 172 water pump was about £40, so less?
Coolent pumps on 1.2 are different they use the AUX belt not the cambelt to power them.

  Shhh
I can strip the pads out on my 182, its real simple..

Simply jack car up, remove wheel, remove lower calliper bolt, loosen top one, open up calliper, remove pads, fit new pads, push pistons back into calliper, fit calliper back down, fit lower bolt, tighten top bolt.. check brake fluid, press pedal few times to pump brakes up, check level...

Other side is the same... easy peasy..dont forget the brake paste / copper grease..

Disks are one step further, that involves taking the calliper mount off, which is removing the whole calliper, bottom & top bolt. Then lifting it off, easy.. :), undoing calliper mount.. norm 19mm bolt on 182, undo brake disk bolts, remove disk, fit disk, fit calliper mount, push piston back, fit pads, top calliper bolt, botton calliper bolt, fit wheel, pump brakes as above..

they took the engine out to do a cambelt?!?!?!?!

cant beleive they are charging you that much to do a waterpump when they are doing the cambelt anyway!

i love renault sometimes, they wanted to cut a hole in my mates bonnet to fix a broken bonnet release cable, wanted to charge him for new bonnet + paint, new cable and labour. 5 mins with a screwdriver and i had it open then replaced the bonnet cable, all for about £30 that the cable cost!

heh, Renault wanted £650 for my 72k service with a new cambelt. I took it to a garage that my dad goes to an £250 for the lot. A world of difference in price, Renault are a rip off.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Can't moan about the cost of owning a car... and if you will insist on waiting until reg change for your new car then you will have another couple of months running costs to go!

I sold my Smart about 5000 miles before it needed around a grands work (at an independent, about £2k at Merc in Derby!) because I just didn't want to spend the money on a car that I wanted to shift this summer.

v.exspensive!!....makes me think, i just bought my 1.2 16v, which is coming up to being 5 years old!and i have a feeling the water pump and cambelt need replacing pretty soon, and M.O.T in april.
sorry to sound so simple, but is the cambelt etc an easy job which a small local garage can do?? on a mk2 ph2??

  visualize whirled pe
Pretty exspensive, a decent indi garage will do it for less than that,
I use a french car specialist about 130 miles away when I visit my folks, he's an enthusiast as well as a decent mechanic with all the computer stuff to hook up to and is about 1/3 cheaper than renault.

I know how you feel though, when I bought my clio I didnt have a clue about cambelts changing times and it needed one about 2 months after I bought it, cambelt service and new front brakes = £500 gone just like that.
Would have rather spent the money on a holiday etc...
