Ive been thinking of getting a 182, had a couple of insurance quotes but they havent asked about any extras i.e. cup spolier, cup suspension...

are these classed as mods? Do I need to tell the insurance company?

Any factory fit options do not have to be declared!
I dont think thats true. I could be wrong but AFAIK you have to declare any change from standard spec even if they are factory options as they can affect the value of your car. You will most likely find that they make little or no difference to your premium but you should declare them as factory options.

When I told my insurance that I had changed cars they asked if it was moddified, I said not modded but has factory optional extras, and I was told I would need to tell them, which I did. All my options (Leather, Alloys, upgraded CD changer) are now listed on my policy at no extra charge.

Guess it depends what insurance company you are with. Elephant never asked me, the P1 came with 6 grand worth of extras, wheels, brakes, recaros etc.

Surely standard is how it comes out of the factory. They are fitted in the factory so are factory fit? Arent modifications things that YOU have altered on the car since collecting it.

Its a bit of a grey area really, but if it left the factory like that then its not been "modified" as such, it was built that way!

On my elephant policy it states;

"Anything that alters the manufacturers standard specification"

Id take it from that, that ou do not need to decalre factory mods!

Its risky to leave it like that. I have asked before. Had to pay extra on my M3 when specified with 19" wheels from the factory. Some mods they want to know about, but dont care - alcons on the P1 for example.

I personally would declare everything. If you are involved in a serious accident with a personal claim against you, you could lose everything.

I agree, it is not clear what exactly you should declare to your insurance if you have factory options fitted. I also agree that its not "modified" with factory options, but it isnt standard spec is it? Standard to me means the basic trim level for that car, so if you get the cup suspension and spoiler etc for the 182, then it is no longer standard spec.

Spirez, I dont disagree with you, it left the factory like so YOU have not modified your car, but can you say that it is standard with factory options?

Paul, If I had a motor like a P1 with 6K of options Id sleep better at night knowing that it was definately fully insured. Experience has taught me that insurance companies will pick up on even the smallest discrepancy to avoid paying out.

Boyced, forgot to say before that you probably wont be asked if the options are fitted, it will be up to you to tell them. I wouldnt call them mods, just say that you have factory options fitted and see what they say. As I said in my earlier post I dont think they would make much of a difference to a premium, but I could be wrong! Perhaps some of the peeps on the board that work in the insurance business could enlighten us?

I think "standard" is how the car left the factory. Many insurers go further and ask the question

"has the car been altered from the manufacturers specification?"

Basically u have nothing to worry about if it is a factory option IMHO

My other half had this dilemma with her Seicento Sporting Abarth recently. You should declare that it has a Cup spoiler/bonnet stripes/Cup handling pack but state that they are official Renault options, fitted by them. That way youve declared the exact spec of the car, but as theyre manufacturer options it wont make any difference to your premium.

Dont mess with insurers - tell them everything. Otherwise they can get out of paying out if you have an accident.
