F4R Cambelt Replaced

  Renault Scenic
Hi I replaced the cambelt and tensioner+idler bearings and all seems fine, the car starts and runs smooth and has okay power but it feels as if it does not have the same power as before and it seems very slightly heavier on fuel but still not bad according to the onboard computer...

I have taken all appart again and confirmed that the cam slots are in line at TDC. Is there any sure way to know?

Do the three arrows line up on the tensioner pulley?

If everything looks right then it might be something else, is the dephaser pulley any noiseyer?

Firstly did you use the correct tools to lock everything in place or just do it as you would on most other cars?

I only had two arrows on the tensioner pulley and they line up... The dephaser doen't seem noisier or even noisy...
:( Drove the car again today and it seems fine but definitely not as much performance as before

You do know the pulleys cam move independently of the cams? Which is why you must lock the cams themselves off at the opposite end to the pulleys, and also you must use a pin through the front of the block to lock the crank too?

If not then chances are it will be out which would explain the lack of power ;)

I made the tools to lock the cam and the crank... The cams were locked in line with each other

Martin,

It is most likely that the timing is out somewhere. Did you unlock the sprockets when changing the belt? This is a common mistake but is required to allow the belt tension to properly equalise as failure to do so allows it all to creep a degree or three ruining the overall feel that these cars deliver.

As per the above link Danny posted there are too many horror stories and tales of fail on here alone and this is just one site. We've all done rectification work for other garages to know it doesn't take much to faff the job up.

Hi Mick... This was changed at 90000kms, when I put the new belt on (with the cams and crank locked) it felt as if the belt would not locate properly on the cam sprockets unless one of them would move very slightly. At the time I didn't think much of it but i guess that didn't work out too well... Would you suggest that I repeat the procedure and release the two cam sprockets this time? Can I harm the engine by driving the car if the timing is not 100%?

Yes, i'd redo the job properly mate which is why we double check the job before we put the covers and mounts back on. What harm will incorrect timing do? The only harm you're doing is to your wallet not to mention losing the enjoyment from the car. Everytime i drive a customers 182 i seriously consider buying one because they're so much fun but too small for me as an everyday toy.
