Fao 172/182 - of those who got theirs for a 'bargain' price

Just wondering really, in relation to this thread

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=305083

I agree that the car does seem to be advertised for a fair bit over what most (and me) would pay.

I read a lot on here about - " I only paid x amount for my mint 172/182 etc"

Or "nah, it's not worth that at all, you can but one a few years newer etc"

So my question is, of all of those who bought these 'baragain' cars, how amny of you have had to pay out for repairs shortly after (say 6month/under a year) after buying them ??

I'm intrigued tbh, i'll use DrRollo as an example (I hope you don't mind dude) bought a 172 for a good price, but seems to be spending out on it all the time.

Are these 'good deal/bargain' examples all they crack up to be ?

I'm only really interested in 172/182's tbh.

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
ive paid slightly over the odds for both of mine but outlay has been minimal 1st one was bought off someone that had looked after it soooo well i knoe it was worth the little extra i paid, and i sold it for more than that again a year later

i paid 6k for my 51 plate 172, from a dealer, with warrenty, belts just done, full 36k service just done etc.

  Dyson
Bought mine in the trade at a bargain price 20 months ago and its only just going in for its 1st warrenty reapir next week (ECU bracket)

Mind you it is driven by a girl 95% of the time!;)

  Mk4 .:R32
Mine was 6600 last jan. Had to get an exhaust after a couple of months as it had corroded and fallen off.

Other than that, just mods and wear n tear type stuff like brakes and tyres.

Need cam belt and aux belt doing asap, but I can't be arsed paying like 5-600 quid on a freaking service at 36k miles

  FN2 Type R +MK6 Golf
Ive just looked on PH and theres a few 182's nocking around for 6.5k

That is a good price

  A4 Avant
Paid £5000 for mine 15 months ago, since had cambelt changed and it's about to be serviced. Only other expense has been a new exhaust. Mine was priced quite well and i've only really had one unexpected bill.

Car I bought (on that thread) has needed pads, thats it. Had Fred give it the once over, all seems good. Think the point is, why would you assume a 7k 43k mile car would be more reliable than a 5.5k one?

When looking for my 172 and then 182, I disregarded cars under a certain price because I just presumed they were tatty.

I'd rather pay slightly more than other people and know I have a mint one than take a chance on a cheapy and regret it.

There are a few 182's on PH for around £6k, the market is so saturated with them I would say thats all they are worth, with secondhand 197's now starting at £10k I wouldn't be paying £8k for a 182.
To some extent CS is a 'devaluation site' but at the end of the day French cars have never held their money well and never will, if you think the RS Clio's are bad look at a reasonable spec Laguna 4yrs old, then compare that to a Passat of the same age.

These cars are worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for them, there are so many out there though some people are bound to get a bargain. I got a reasonably good deal on my Lupo, infact I probably didn't give him the going rate for it. The fact of the matter was my budget was x so thats what I offered him, irrespective of how much i thought it was worth. He had a brand new Golf Gti waiting at the dealership for collection, 57 plate was just been introduced, he was eager to collect it. It depends on peoples circumstances, not everyone wants to hold out for months and month for the sake of £500, especially if they have monthly repayments on the car etc. Some people are just happy to have £500 in their pocket more than they would get on part ex.

Same here - Im sure a lot of people would say I paid too much for mine, and yes I have seen them cheaper, but for my peace of mind it was worth spending the extra few quid.

Plus on this site it seems everything is either over priced, or too cheap therefore must be bent!

Agreed, you make good comments there:)

I'm not asking about reliability. In my experience you usually get what you pay for unless you get a baragin - hence the thread.

Got mine for 7k but have had a new clutch (dont think it was needed now though as the problem is elsewhere!) and a few other minor warranty jobs.

But 2nd hand car values are all over the shop. Mine is mint, and a fair price. 7k is way over the top given the age of the car, and has no bearing on the quality of the mechanicals.

I've not long bought a 182, and i probably paid too much but 'usually' you get what you pay for.. mine is a FF 55plate, inferno and under 6k miles. So you dont get these every day.. exactly what i wanted.

i'm really fussy with cars and it has to be perfect like new, so by the time i've bought one for a grand or so less, refurbed the wheels, sprayed the bumper/bonnet, done the brakes you might aswell buy an original one with no repairs.

I looked at quite a few some were expensive some cheap, most were completely hopeless in terms of body work. I dont want to be getting paint/repairs done on a car that is 3 yrs old.

Some of these 6k (i've hardly seen any even on PH at this price) 182 are super high miles/pebble dashed front, cat D and generally nasty.

Re laguna's it makes them a great buy really, my daily drive is a Laguna and it was much cheaper than an equivalent car like you say. Its been 100 % reliable too. It doesnt have to be mint either as i pile on the miles without worrying about it.

  182 ff
paid 12k brand new most expensive thing till last week in 3 years was the cam belt change 36k service

but now just out of warrenty the heater has gone and the right xenon lol love it too pieces and the best 12 grand i have ever spent

  BMW M135i
I payed 6.5k for my 53 plate monaco blue 172 with 25k on it last July, which was about 1k underpriced compared to the others on autotrader at the time. I'm pretty sure most garages would sell it for the same price now than the 7-7.5k they would've when I bought mine.

Gave mine a very fine toothcomb because it seemed too cheap but didn't/couldn't find anything and its been fine so far *touch wood*.

You've got to remember the CS price world is different to the real one most of the time.

  Tangoed Works
I paid £9800 for a June 05 plate in Feb 06. 182 FF both cup packs and a £900 service from Renault, they also extended the warranty to Oct 08.

Have only had to do tyres twice, front brakes just recently and thats it. Not much has gone wrong apart from the creaking suspension and the climate unit losing some digits oh and a xenon went with the washers. All done under warranty for free though.

Service was £220 and £260, thats the only outgoings.

  Iceberg 172
ive got a 04 plate 172 FF,paid £7600 for it,it had 21k miles on the clock when i bought it 2 years ago,it now only has 31,800 miles on it,upto now ive only had to replace all the tyres, passed its MOT yesterday with flying colours

  Clio 182
I paid £6'995 last week for a '04 plate Black Gold FF 182 with 33k on the clock from a main dealer complete with 12 month warranty. Was comparable if not better (quite a bit better actually) than many other examples on Autotrader and i'm very happy with the purchase. :)

  mk3 golf gti
bought my 03 plate for 5995 last july, since then new throttle body, throttle pedal/sender, four tyres and suspension top mounts. so all in about 6700. not the worst, not the best

What constitutes a bargain is all relative.
Comparing the market now to what it was a year, or even 6 months ago i think you are much more likely to pick up a "bargain" now because there are more cars available and prices have dropped.
That said, i've heard it may be picking up.

Personally i think that getting a bargain is all down to good fortune.
You can do your research all day long, find a car you think is perfect and at a knockdown price only for major problems to occur. Or, you are lucky and the car is a little cracker after all.
Problem is it can be very difficult to tell what you are getting, even with best endeavours.

I would say i got a bargain, however the after putting it in to get the headlamp washer done the dealer damaged it, causing a lot of hassle, wasted time and inconvenience so that reduced its "bargain-ness" in my eyes.

My 53 plate was 6k last Oct which seemed good compared to others I looked at. Shortly after getting it the radiator started leaking from the bottom where I couldn't see it (new one fitted under warranty). Then the following month the back box decided to drop off. So got new powerflow for £250. Cambelt has to be done by October (latest) so that will be another £350 or so. Plus could do with 2 tyres soon.
Also have to consider that I got a good trade in on my old shed, that I would have struggled to sell private and would have ended up scrapping.
So not bad I think, touch wood;)

mate mine was 5.5k approx 2 years ago 38k miles 2 owners.. the only thing that needed doing were brakes and disks all round and a cambelt service the following year.

Never let me down.

However ive just started to get some shaking needles on ignition for first 2 seconds which apparently suggests i got a flat battery. So hopefully that should sort it.

But touch wood nothing sinister has happened. :)

My 05 182 was bought on F+F and it cost me 200 quid for the price i paid to the price i sold it for 1 year later

  205Gti,HondaCBR600RR
I think I paid over the odds, but everyone on here always marks the price down. It doesn't really bother me, Ive haven't really spent anything on it mechanical wise.

A higher price doesn't mean it's a better example of the car.
True, but i'm a firm believer of the saying 'you get what you pay for'

For example early 182's for 6.5k - will they be as good as one for 7k etc ?? I doubt they will.

  '02 172 Cup
i paid £5k 6months ago, for a 52 plate, mint 172 cup. FRSH. 40k. but no cambelt done. i got this done at Rentech. i have not had to spend another penny on it. and dont think i will have to. but..... i did pay over the odds i reckon. however i look at it that - i was happy to pay that money, for that car at the time. thats good enough for me! and i have slightly more peace of mind that i got a well looked after one....

  LY V6 with Recaros
My other half paid 6.2 for his 05 reg 182. It has both cup packs and recaros, 40k miles, FSH. So far he hasn't had any problems with it, the only thing is it needs most of the wheels refurbed and a door dent taken out. Seems pretty mint for the price he paid.

  Clio 182
A higher price doesn't mean it's a better example of the car.

People will generally try to get the most they can for their vehicle... that's human nature. If I see a car that's priced £6'200 vs the same year/model 182 priced for £7'000 then I would be looking at why that person didn't think they could get as much for their car, and be suspicious as a result. Maybe it needs work doing (bad wheels, tyres replacing, belts doing) and the owner knows this etc etc hence why is selling it cheaper. While this theory is by no means bulletproof, "in general" I think it applies pretty well.

Fair price imo.

He got a very good deal:cool: but you work in the motor trade. Retail that car would be well over a grand more.

I was lucky, I got in quick and bought it direct off the guy we deal with, so managed to get it for trade price. If my work had bought it off the guy instead we wouldn't have got such a good deal, they probably would have it on the forecourt for about 9k too!

  Elise S1 B&C 140
