FAO White Apple Macbook owners.. discolouring?

  Suzuki Ignis Sport
Hi there

I've not had my macbook for long, probably just over 2 months, and noticed that the palm rests on the notebook is starting to discolour and turn yellow...

Just wondered, has yours?... if so, what have you done to get rid of it?

I heard it was caused by the poor plastic that Apple used. :(

Bit crap considering i paid loads for it! =(

Take it to the apple shop. Explain your situation and it will be fixed/replaced. They are also known for cracking near the mouse pad.

Really? that simple?
Another question then, my gf has had hers for a lot longer than me, probably about 3 years, same thing happening, and also has a crack near the mousepad, do u think they'll replace that?

Thanks mate

Yeh, the mousepad crack thing is a known fault with them. They are usually very helpfull in all apple stores anyway. As you said they are a fortune and you dont expect them to have quality issues for years really. They should fix both with no problems

NP dude. Also, just found out the dis-colouring issue is a known fault by apple aswell.

But surely, if they are going to replace it, then the same thing will happen to the replacement pieces?

I know it sounds crude, but the main cause is sweaty hands... There is a known fault with it.

Apple should be able to help you both out though.

you might be lucky with your gf's my mb black was out of apple care and they replaced the case free of charge when it cracked... it is a known problem...

the white is always going to discolour though...

Went to an apple store today asking about it, and they sed they won't replace my discoloured cover, but would replace the cracked cover of my gfs! :S

Its not coz my dirty hands tho, its natural oils that go into the plastic, which shouldn't happen.

Can't help natural oils leaking from my palms

Have you tried using any products to remove the stains!? I'd be tempted to give bleach a try lol

Bit of a bump really..

My MacBook is about 7 months out of warranty, took it to the genius bar due to cracks near the trackpad and they replaced it for me within 30 minutes. I believe the discolouration is covered too, but possibly only in warranty.

Hazza. Was in your situations a few months back. Discolouring is a common problem, and Apple SHOULD replace your case, along with any cracked parts. Mine was 6 months old, and looked 5 years old. Apple requested I sent it to their authorised repairer, who broke promise after promise of when I was supposed to get it back. A month later, it arrived, and looked like this;

The repairer never bothered replacing the topcase, merely made a pitiful attempt to clean all four corners (PIC 1). Never bothered replacing the batter cover either, so I had a nice pristine white bottom case and a lovely yellow square (PIC 2). They never put the keyboard top cover back on properly, and was buldging all the way around the MacBook (PIC 3). Cross-threaded a screw in the battery compartment bay (God knows what the insides looked like) (PIC 4) and managed to chip away at the topcase that they never bothered replacing (PIC 5).

To cut a long story short, Apple requested I send them these pictures and were confused initially as to why the top case had never been changed, as it was covered under, and even outwith warranty. They called an hour after receiving the pictures above and decided it was in their best interest to replace the MacBook with a brand new top of the range (at the time) version of the 13" Unibody MacBook (which was worth around £400 more).

Bearing in mind this took a grand total of 2 months, and 3 weeks in I bought a 17" unibody instead. Sold the little one to a friend for £900 :)

My advice to you is to phone Apple as ask to speak to customer relations. Be calm, but emphasise how disspointed and upset you are. Again, be calm. See where you go from there.

edit: The cracking along the palm area is caused by the nibs along the top of the screen. Over time (with closing the lid), it weakens the plastic. The discolouring is caused by cheap s**t plastic and the heat trying to escape from corners and crevices. Have a look around the infrared port and any other bits like that, and I can guarantee you'll she lots of tiny cracks. Again, shitty plastic.
