Fastest 172? No, cheaper 172.

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Feck which one is fastest or what not!

WHICH IS CHEAPER TO RUN??? Ph1 or Ph2 (not cup)...

Tyres: Ph1 roughly £60 cheaper for a full set,

Tax: 08/09 Ph2 is £25 more,
09/10 Ph2 is £60 more,
10/11 Ph2 is £60-70 more,

MPG: The same-ish depending on how you drive it,

Anything I am missing?

I calculate a ph2 will cost £205 more over 3yrs in just tax and a new set of Eagle F1s.

But a ph1 will need £400 worth of ph2 lights, ph2 bumper and spraying, and colour coding ph1/ph2 side strips for me to be fully happy with it.

So ph2 is cheaper on that basis.

by my calcualtions the tyres on the ph1 are £180ish a set cheaper if you use pe2s

Toyo's are only £36 on 15s £66ish on 16s, massive difference.

ph1 will be way cheaper to buy to

If your that bother'd bout £200 ish pounds over 3 years dont get a RS
end of.

But as the Ph1 is lighter, shouldn't it be a little better on fuel?

That's why I'm askig mate, but guessing it can't be that different.

My local fitter's prices are 195/50/15 F1 GS-D3 = £44, 195/45/16 = £58.69. Hope that's right size for ph2.

Yeah, ph1s are cheaper but its getting hard to find a good one local, don't really want to travel miles and mosts have other mods. A lot of ph2s about so prices not hugely different.

Sorry if my post came across as if I'm on a strict budget or I'm tight lol I was wondering if there would be a bigger price difference running them. I'm dead cert on getting an RS. Wanted a ph1 as I thought it'd be cheaper to run cos of tax mostly but sorting the rear end would cost me more. The last bit of my post was merely a bit more info about my plans

Ph1 cheaper to buy and very slightly to run, but I still couldn't live with that interior and front-end.

Plus I'd still rather have a 53 reg car other an X-reg car.

All down to your bugdet and which you prefer at the end of the day.

Well budget for buying is a bit stretchable, but wondering if there were any major price differences over the years, except tax and tyres.

The little bit more on buying the car will get a newer car with nicer interior like you said. I'm not majorly bothered about which car as I like the look of them both, its just costs over the next few years.

Any difference in servicing? Part prices?

Such as fly-by-wire throttle, or different gearbox?

If you're worried about £2-300 over 3 years, then why are you changing the rear lights and bumper?

Servicing is the same, so I'd go for which one you prefer.

I'd personally liked the Ph2 due to toys and looks, I had a 53 plate 172 for nearly 3 years and would of had a 182 if I had the money.

I'm not worried about £2-300. I was thinking of getting a ph1 as a few months ago, they were a fair bit cheaper than a ph2 but wanted a ph2 rear end. Now ph2 are cheaper than they were, its not a big difference in buying price. Just wondering about running costs.

Maybe I put too much info in 1st post lol

Cheers Dan. It would be nice to change to a ph2, instead of keeping with a ph1 interior.

Having been in Ivan's ph1, the rawness of it felt great, and really convinced me to get a ph1, its just too hard to find something good and not too far away, so will opt for ph2 me reckons. See what comes along within the next couple of weeks.

I think possibly your worrying alot about something really little... lets be honest 300 quid over a year is naff all

  Ph1 172
Get a ph2, stop worrying about nothing!

I was looking for a ph2 but I came across my ph1 flamer with low miles and for a lot less than the ph2 were selling for at the time.

Ph1 better to drive, slightly quicker, cheaper to run, better throttle response. For the price of a ph 2, you could get a ph1 with the body mods done, and stretch to coilovers. I've had 2 ph2's, now a ph1.

Yeah, I'm not really bothered about that cost.

Just wondering if any major cost differences, like if gearbox or engine parts are more expensive cos being a bit different.

Gear ratios slightly longer on the ph1. Evo ran both, could never match the ph1 times.

That's the bit I'm getting at, is the difference significant or not?

Why do you find the ph1 better to drive btw?

im like warren - had a ph2 and a ph1 - i found the fuel economy slightyl better on my ph2 tho

love all its refinements - however the ph1 is lots of fun to drive

The extras of the ph2 are appealing, but I've never had them so not so bothered, all I want is AC so ph1 is ok.

What makes the ph1 better to drive? Is it the weight difference?

Why would you want to change ph1's slaggy standard apperance by fitting cheesey rear lights colour coded side strips and a ph2 rear bumper?!? ph1 looks better standard it's cheaper and is a better car to drive end of.

The weight difference plays it's part, as does the engine (slightly less refined but much better throttle response), steering has more feel, the ph2 feels less adjustable, less fun.

Thanks Warren.

I was always going ph1 until the last week or two, the only ph1 within reasonable distance needs wings respraying and has no service history. Only considering ph2s as there is a bit more choice.

From your experience, would I feel unhappy in a ph2? Its still a great car ya?

All good cars. From my point of view, for the price of a semi decent ph2 (4.5-5k) I've got a ph1 on awesome coilovers, and (soon) some reclining buckets. If you've not driven a Trophy or coilovered 172, you'll be more than happy with a standard ph2. Where are you based?

Its hard finding a decent one local though :( Not prepared to travel miles and miles just yet. Am checking autotrader, pistonheads and the for sale section twice a day lol fingers crossed something will be about soon!
