Few niggles pointed out by renault...

  Iceberg 2002 172
On a 2002 monaco 172 currently reading 54444 miles..

It has this last week had:

Cambelt
silver service
exhaust back box

Totalling £995.84p from callow marsh renault in hereford.

They said it also needs:

4 new tyres (i knew the fronts were low but the backs are absolutely fine!)
2 CV boots
4 wheels alignment
front wheels rubbing / worn through front arch liners.

So my questioin is this:

Where can i get all these parts for cheap because in 2 months this car has cost us over 5 and a half grand....

Also would there be a particular reason that on everything else (insurance and logbook) the car is a 172 but according to renault its a 182?

thanks
matt

First things first, hi and welcome :D

Secondly, you should have looked on here before going to renault for a service:nono:. Nearly £1K on a service is laughable, but hey. There are plently of renault specialists that will do the same thing for half the money and will give you a better service. Not having a dig, just annoys me when renault rip people off. Become a member on here and you get access to all the forum offers and discounts from specialists accross the country.

Anyway,

tyre wise, www.camskill.co.uk is very cheap in general. depends what you're after really.

CV boot wise, are the drive shafts knocking when accellerating? if not i'd leave them until the start to go. The boots are probably just leaking slightly. Welcome to owning a renault.

The arch liner thing is a bit wierd? either the liner is loose and has rubbed due to that, or the car is lowered? Camber might be out? there is loads of clearance under there on standard setup, so something isn't right.

What has cost you £5,500 so far? Presume you didn't pay more than £4 for the car?

Lol thanks mate :)

May i point out i have owned 4 clio's (mk1 RT's and 16v's) so i know about the reliability or rather lack of it!

The 172 belongs to the gf, And it was such a big bill because she redlined it showing off to her friends and sheared the bottom cambelt idler off and nearly snapped the cambelt!

Also living in rural mid wales a local garage that can do a cambelt on a 172 is a rarity let alone a local specialist plus all the hassles we had like having to trailor the car there etc so she took the plunge and took it to renault as they are the only people round here who actually know what theyre doing with a car like this!

Thank you for the tyres link thats very usefull!

Unfortunately yes the cv joints make a hell of a racket all of a sudden so is that 2 new shafts?

And money wise so far its cost us:

Car: £3500
Insurance: £1100 (gf is only 18 with 1 yrs NCB)
Cambelt / Service / Exhaust: £1000

And the tax is out end of Feb and MOT is up end of March!

And the tyres are gonna cost around £100 after fitting / balancing
Then the 4 wheel alignment is gonna be about £30

Not cheap owning a renault lol

And im not sure if it has been lowered but this is the ride height (the car is completely standard so shouldnt of thought its lowered and renault didnt mention it if theres a snapped spring?)

Thank you for your helpfull reply i appreciate it :)

omg, £1100 quid for insurance at 18 is a bargain!!! Paid 1250 when I was 22. women get it easy :(

It will be a knocking noise when you're accellarate while turning. Hopefully it's nothing more serious than that though. best thing to do is put it on full lock in a car park and drive off. try both directions and you will be able to tell if both have gone. Hope that makes sense.

Arch wise, they look fine from the pic. can't see why they would have been rubbing really. :S

Try contacting 'Stan' (Craig irl) @ AP-Developments in future. Very good rep and in Wales.

He lurks about on here fairly often...

The inner arch liners being worn sounds weird. Have they ever popped off and dragged on the car or ground? Mine have wear marks on both sides, but that's due to going a bit low with the coilovers :)

CV joints...worth either having them refurbished or replaced on an exchange basis. Do NOT go to Renault, they will cost a bomb. Replacing the whole shaft is easier than pissing about with the CV joints and gaitors. If you do it yourself bear in mind you will need to drain the gearbox first otherwise when you take off the passenger side it'll go all over the place ;)

If you wanna try it yourself it's not hard, but if you are not confident I wouldn't try it hehe. But make sure you get them done BEFORE tracking otherwise you may mess up the geometry a bit.

I have had bits of wheel arch trim drop, one pece is currently held up by tie wraps. New ones are £75 for the bigger pieces. In general they are held together with nylon fixings that lock into metal brackets on the car structure.

As they are plastic they can put a groove in the tyre. Run your hand over the tyre and see where they touch. You need to take the wheel off and make sure they secured out the way. I also had the rear wheel rub on the trim and reset the rear wheels (and then checked it out on a laser system). They is not a lot of space in them there arches.

Thank you for all the replies people :)

Wobba i would do it myself but she wont let me! and tbh i have just done a full engine swap on a williams, a valver and a saxo vtr in the last couple of weeks and i cba with the hassle! If it gets done by a garage it has some guarantee and a bit of piece of mind.

Have had dealings with stan in the past and he is the bomb when it comes to renault! but he is the other end of wales to me unfortunately :(

Also i discovered the passenger side driveshaft and gearbox oil thing when removing my first clio valver gearbox! haha :D didnt make that mistake again!

I shall try and get a pic of the passengr side ride height as this side arch liner has completely rubbed away! theres nothing left but s few worn down bits and a few clips!

thanks

Im 19 had my licence 2 years and got 2 NCB and my insurance on the car would be nearly 3 grand!

She is 18 had her licence just over a year and wrote off her first car within a few weeks! then had a 1.2 corsa for a year and now leaped to a 172! insurance is in her name but with her mum as a named driver and is fully comprehensive! girls get it soooo good!
