Filippo's Trophy

  Passat
I thought I'd get this thread going as there's a bit of work going into it and I'd like some opinions on future plans etc. I bought this from a member on here a few weeks ago and just getting round to sorting a few bits. The car has been registered as a Cat D at some point and need a bit of TLC to get it right. I think its had a rear quarter at some point and the paint job they did down the driver's side was not the best. Since then it's had a new door from another Trophy which shines like a rose between two thorns.

Inside, the Recaro's are spot on and everything works as it should. It's very dirty though and judging from the seatbelts Albert Steptoe was a previous owner. The back seats are pretty disgraceful as well. I have some half leather ones on the way so the car will be looking a lot better in the near future. Also ordered the dash trim/gear insert from a 172 to brighten the place up.

The car came with a 197 steering wheel which looked very nice but something just didn't feel right. I've replaced it with a knackered 182 whhel for the time being - I have a Snappy re-trim on order.

It's a cracking drive though. I thought the 172 handled well but this is just incredible. Absolutely loving it...just need to iron out the bad bits.

And the pics...

New splitter and tyres are in order - but what do you make of the bolts?

The front seats are good though!

And with the dear 172...that's for sale by the way...

Same as my old bullets - not great pictures but they look great on the car.

What was wrong with the 197 wheel? Wouldn't return to centre? I tried one many years ago and it felt horrid, was off in minutes.

I enjoyed my 172 but the Trophy drove like a different car.

  Passat
Yeah, 'scuse the photos. Just using my phone. The tyres also look fucked in the pictures, when they're not that bad at all. I will bd changing them though.

Yeah, the steering felt so heavy and wouldn't return to centre. The size of the wheel is perfect...but I couldn't live with it.

I think the main faults with the 1*2's is the steering wheel and seating position. Very odd they go to all that effort with a number of other areas and didn't put a better attempt of a steering wheel on. So long as you're not bothered about an air bag, £200 on a RS wheel, boss and ph1 stalk will fix that though.

Got any long term aims with it?

I'm quite keen to keep the airbag so going to get a refurb'd wheel. I agree though, they're stupidly big. Feels especially daft after the 197 wheel. Right now the main job is getting the paintwork sorted and the interior cleaned up. Mechanically the car is very good. Could do with rear discs and pads but I think they'll be staying standard.

Amazing what you can do these days with the right cleaning products! My one had some swirls on it - mainly because I used to was it so much.

What do you do with your 172? Is that your daily?

  Passat
The Trophy will be my daily. The 172 is up for sale. Been a great car for me and probably slightly more practical as a daily. I just don't really have the room for all the cars we have at the moment. Sad really, someone's going to bag a bargain.

I know knack all about tidying up paintwork etc. I may have to get some lessons from someone on here.

I don't like those bolts, they seem to suit some cars but som Silver ones would have looked better.

Or rusty like mine.

A few bits sorted today. A new brake switch to clear a fault picked up by RS Tuning. New boot struts to allow me to open AND close the boot. And new rear seats are in. They make the car look ten times cleaner. Love them.

Old ones out

Off to get the drivers side resprayed next week so should be seeing some big improvements soon.

I've just come to put new 'Trophy' decals on the sills and noticed that they are white, rather than silver. Is this acceptable, or am I about to commit a heinous crime? Can't decide what I think.

It's your car ;) but can't see white looking as good as silver (Or anthracite or black to mention other non standard colours) Were they from Renault or from someone else?

Seats look awesome!

The stickers were from the Trader on here, Never noticed they weren't silver :(

Do Renault sell the stickers?

  Passat
I got them from the guy I bought the car from.

Im gonna bang them on and see what it looks like.

Theyre about £30 from Renault. w*****s!

So the re-spray has been done and looks pretty dam good! The roof still requires paint but that can wait until my pockets refill.

New Trophy decals are on. Sadly they're white, not silver. They look ok for the time being. Opinions welcome!

All coming together nicely. A steering wheel has been posted by Snappy today so once that is on I'll be reigning in the purse strings for a few months. Thanks for looking.

Nice, Pzeros are a good call too. I'm running them on the rears at the moment.

I'm jealous of your rear seats... I've been looking for a set in decent condition (and cheap) for a while now :dapprove:

They were £70 delivered mate. An absolute bargain.

Yeah, the old seats and seatbelts aren't the best. I think the car was owned by Stig Of The Dump who used to car share with The Twits.

  Whichever has fuel
And jetwash the boot mat while you're there. Look at the state of it, it's brown!

Steering wheel arrived from Snappy today and I fitted it this afternoon. He's done a great job, it looks and feels loads better. Can't recommend him enough. All the manky Trophy dash trim / gear insert has been replaced with standard silver stuff out of a 1*2. An end to a very productive week!
