Fitting 172 stereo into display-less authentique?

I've sold my CD player/multichanger/lead to a member off here. All from a 172.

He has tried to fit it but has realised that his car doesn't have the display on top of the dash.

He's not worried about the display, just wants to play CD's. Can it be done? How do you go about inputting the code with no display??

(His interweb is down so I said I'd ask for him.)

radio should still power up fine etc as they still fitted tuner radios to the authentique but they had a small rectangle on the radio as the display iirc.
inputting the code i imagine will literally have to turn on then press buttons as if you were using it with display so just remembering what he has pressed so he can make sure he has each number correct

So how do I start inputting it, if i turn the ignition on and turn the radio on, what do I need to press to change the number up or down, the arrows? how do i move onto the next number!?

Sitting in my car on neighbours connection, its soo slow!!

iirc press number 1 repeatedly so it goes 1,2,3,4,etc

so digits are as follows:
0000 code
l l l l
1234 button radio
