Fitting Cup suspension to Cliosport MK1

Im thinking of getting the Cup suspension (shocks and springs) and fitting it to my Cliosport MK1. However, Renault have stated that this suspension is incompatible with my Clio...is this the case....would I be best going for Koni, EiBachs, Bilstein?

Just go with the Eibach/Konis combo its a lot less hassle.....do Bilstein do a suspension kit for the 172s ?

The Cup suspension should just bolt straigt onto a mk1 172?!

Would definately make an improvement IMO as I have trackday experience in both a mk1 172 and a Cup.

as rich says it all should fit. if it is worthwhile depends on the price of the cup suspension compared to an after market suspension upgrade.

Can get the cup suspension (shocks and all) for around £220...going to look at aftermarket suspension upgrades tomorrow......have any of you altered your suspension set up.....not impressed with the current handling....just seems too sloppy for the car when cornering hard.....whats other peoples experience?

you will get pitching as you are more than likely giving it some beans!!! beefed up shocks will def help that... might be worth getting polybushes as well....

bilstein are about to release a kit in April (now).... it will be good....

personally I would go for a aftermarket kit as you will more than likely not be too happy with the cup setup if you not that happy with your current one...

Jay.... is there significant difference in the technical ratings of the two cars.... not noticed a HUGE difference on the road between the two!??

Yeah, the mk1 172 is not the best handling car of the current 172/182 family...

They roll too much, they understeer when pushed and theres not as much feedback as with the later cars, and this really shows on a track.

The Cup setup is a little lower & a little stiffer, which combined with the additional front castor & wider track really transforms the car. You could get wheel spacers to increase the track on the mk1 172 to match the Cup which will also improve handling.

nah, suspension wise they are very similar.

Spring rates and damping rates arent published though, easy enough to check with a dynomometer though. But i wouldnt expect a massive dfference between cup and 172 dampers/springs. Listed as the same part anyway.

Think Ill go with a aftermarket suspension kit....either Eibach or Bilstein...not at all impressed with the current suspension set up....is the new 182 any better really? I agree totally with you Rich-D.....hardly ever chuck the car into a corner these days....

the actual design is the same but there must be a difference in the spring rates/damping as when i drive them at work i think the phase 2 is a lot better ride than the phase 1. Renault dont release actual fugures in the manuals so theres no written proof of the difference but they do feel different in my opinion.

i thought he was talking about between the 172 and the CUP, not MK1 and MK2.

I found the MK1 more fun it was twitchy as hell and more lively over bumps, the MK2 is solid and progressive.

And the extra track doesnt affect handling as such, it only improves feel since you increase the scrub radius, castor offset and thus increase the moment about the steering axis. THe castor give the better pitch in.

Yeh I am....Mk1 Cliosport 172. Michael, are these coil overs the adjustable suspension set up? Not up with all this jargon yet! Really just want to improve the handling...prevent body roll as much as possible....if I was to get the car lowered by 30-40 mm, could i still at a later date fit say 16" rims to my motor?

  Clio II and Grand Modus

The H&R´s are spot on when it comes to handling, and body roll is a thing from the past...........easy to adjust to suit your wheels and needs. 16" is no problem , i´m on 17´s with aprox. -65mm on a non sport = -55mm on a 172 so 16´s will be ok. The best thing I have ever spend my £££ on. Search the forum and you will find lots of topics on coilovers.
