You can't expect the unexpected.

Yes you can. Defensive driving means you drive as though everyone else will drive into you, and you expect oil slicks and manhole covers. I'm not saying I'm a driving god. But part of being a 'safe' driver is expecting the unexpected. That's why old farts like me with full protected no-claims pay peanuts to insure our cars :approve:

Go and do your IAM Roy... ^^^ ... you're almost there already.

What I teach, and what I practice, is to be asking yourself this constantly as you drive, regardless of time/conditions;

What can I see?
What can't I see?
What can I reasonably expect to happen?

If you are asking yourself those questions as you drive, it's rare that anything happens suddenly or is a surprise to you.

I do drive like this a lot. But other times I drive like a car thief when I think conditions allow. An AIM course inst necessary IMO. It might improve my skills though, but at a cost.

Yes, the forum is funking s**t. It's being hosted by monkeys.

I've just read this and I have to agree with Roy. Clios handle just fine in the wet, very well in fact. They'll only spin if you do silly things. I don't think it was ABS that saved you, more likely to have been your ESP, as that corrects spins, lift-off oversteer and other moments of control-loss. Just take it steady.

Sounds to me that instead of having all these Clio meetings at rolling roads (for what?) you should to be arranging a day at a skid pan somewhere.You could learn somthing and have some fun at the same time

I had a moment like this late one night last week on a big wet roundabout near where i live....but i kinda provoked it so i knew what was coming.
She did let go in a big way though and there was a moment when i thought i may end up having a meeting with the roundabout kerb but it all came good.

Was good fun but still took some manhandling to get it back.

Lol, you guys haven't experienced wet weather fun until you have been in a mrwd that has a fair wack of power. lol. "oh whats wrong with the car, seems to be missing? oh no im wheel spinning in 5th gear again". lol. Is defiantly an experience, and you have to be totally switched on 110%, and constantly monitoring the road surface for dips and bumps, specially at motorway speeds, as a nice dip on a wet road, specially while cornering can get a little exciting. lol. The MR2 sites make slightly depressing reading at this time of year. But wouldn't swap him for the world.
To be honest it doesn't matter what car you are in, if its wet you have just got to look out. You have no idea what the road surface could be covered with, just waiting for the rain to release it upon you, doesn't matter if its rwd, fwd or 4wd, its still going to catch the unaware driver out. Is a guy on one of the MR2 forums, been driving MR2's since they first started importing turbos into the uk, has loads of track day experience, would consider him a great driver. Last week, wet conditions, oil on road, straight into crash barrier, and wrote off a car he has spent years building and perfecting. Experienced or not, it can still get you.
