Possibly a stupid question but I havnt noticed it before, but should the top hats rotate in a circular motion when the steering is turned, I always thought they didnt rotate with the steering.

Front Strut Top Hat Question

Anyone at all?
Golf 7.5R & Clio 200
Pretty sure that's normal.
BMW M135i; Clio 172
Mine rotate with the steering too.
I've been reading a lot about the top mounts because I was so shocked to see a gap between the hat & body, and to see the funny angles they sit when steering. And TBH I'm still not 100% sure, but I think the hat does very little other than stop the struts falling out when the wheels are unloaded. I'd be delighted if someone could clarify this.
I think mine are worn (posted vid of them here..... http://www.cliosport.net/threads/top-mount-condition.798243/ ), but I've managed to pick up a set of K-tec mounts now so will fit those regardless.

If they didn't tou would find it hard to go round bends lol
I always thought the bearing under the rubber doughnut rotated and everything above that stayed static.

Only on solid top mounts as they are bolted in the turrets.
Standard ones are raised and turn with the steering.

Ah ok, It was the way solid ones worked that prompted me to ask the question actually, i assumed the standard top mount would work in a similar fashion and remain static.
