Fuel consumption Mk1 1.2 - problem

My wife's N-reg 1.2 is eating fuel. The odo said two hundred and something miles after using a full tank... eek! My 2.5litre BMW which is the same age, does far better than that! Any thoughts on what may be wrong with it?

When was it last serviced, how many miles etc......
Does the car have a maf (a mass air sensor) these are usually made by Bosch and are positioned after the airbox on the way to the injector.
When i had my Golf GT Tdi mine went the car`s mpg dropped from 45 to about 22 so if it has one it could be this. If not i`d book it in.

It was MOT'd a couple of months back by a Renault/Citroen specialist. Passed with flying colours. I will ask them to take a look.
