Full service history... oh except the cambelt.

  FiestaST(ex 172 Cup)
My friend is looking at buying a 2004 182 with 55k miles from his mate, I'm helping him buy a decent one for £3000. It's black, has both cup packs, is standard and has a 'full' service history. I've now learned that it has never had the cam belt, aux belt or dephaser changed - so FSH it is not and its seriously overdue (as you can work out). The seller wants at least £3000 for it and I've told my friend to offer him £2500 as it needs circa £500 spent for the belts. Seller says no because if you do it DIY its £100 for the parts.

Is my estimation of £2500 about right/fair? I have no photos, sorry. But we know it's in decent condition because my friend has seen it in the past.

FLOL @ DIY for £100.

Walk away.

There's SO many for sale on here.

If this joker can't get the belts done on time, what else hasn't he done ?

Oil from the chip-pan in the kitchen .. cos it's oil, right ?

Where on here? I've sent him the details of Ryan's 182 in the for sale section but other than that I'm seeing nothing. I like the look of Ryan's and it's definitely on the list. We were going to see it (the DIY cambelt one) tonight but with this guys attitude it doesn't instil confidence!

8 years on a cambelt that's meant to be changed at 5?!

Makes me cringe thinking about driving that!

What a joker to advertise that as FSH, then tells you to jog on at the thought of allowing £500 for the work.

Sadly, he will end up selling it at that price to someone who's similarly clueless.

Like you said offer him £2500 and if he says no then walk away

If you get that for that price and end up doing the belts I say thats a good buy.

Where ?!

There's 6 ads for 182s on the first page of cars for sale ... I haven't looked at the ads so maybe they're all sold.

Four 172s and a ph1 also on the first page there.

Of all those - I'd have the ph1 all day long.

He wants a 182 so its only a 182, and £3000 is the target price. So nothing with loads of miles. I've looked but there are not a lot of ones that he would consider buying.

Liquid yellow one - too much money.
Titanium - too many miles.
jimjim's - too much money and highly modded
james' - possibility, but out of budget
nicholas' - cat D

And then there is Ryan's which we are looking into.

Every1 to there own but I think some people can be silly with the trivial things.

Too many miles :-/ can mean many things but good genuine cars that have been serviced properly and more than likely sat on the motorway for the majority are normally exellent runners and have loads of life in them.

and for cat d, it's a "recorded" repair and the damage did not exceed the value of the car. So not a write off and most are repaired by reputable bodyshops ect.

In both these cases as long as your looking at a good example not a ragged abused motor these factors are in your favour for a good buyers deal.

Fair points. I mean no disrespect to the sellers of these cars but my friend is willing to spend £3000 down to about £2500, so he is looking for a car at around that price which means those 2 aren't in. Cat D is also hard to insure.

I've just been on pistonheads and I can find 10+ with mentions of the belts done at under 3k.

So either his mates one is worth 2500 or buy something else.

Just for example a few I've plucked out in 3 mins...

Cheap:

Midrange:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4190735.htm (looks tidy, no cup packs)

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4202833.htm

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4221606.htm (good spec)

Top of budget:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4207841.htm

Bear in mind that just because some have had the cambelt done (5 year/72k interval) they may be due their next aux belt (3year/36k interval).

Thanks. Sounds like a good buy but he said no to a Cup when I asked.

His mate won't take £2500, so he's been told he's being stupid and we're not going to see it. Probably a good thing as there is probably more DIY efforts elsewhere. Some poor sod is going to buy that one and get burned I think.

We're hopefully going to look at one of the above links tonight as one of them is local (ish) to us.
