Full Service

Hello,
How much excluding parts should I be looking to pay for a full service; theres one down my work which wants £140 plus parts and vat. It's convenient as it's just over the road from me but I was wondering if the price is a little extortionate?

He said basically have around £250 to hand but most of the time it doesn't come that high.

I have just been quoted £220 for a 24k service with Renault in Birmingham, he said add + £200 for a 36 k service for the timing belt to be done.
It seems to vary Dealer to Dealer.
I will be taking mine to a Specialist to have the Oil+Filters changed, Brake Fluid Changed in the next month.
I'm hoping to pay no more than £200 for that??

Do you guys never fancy doing the service yourselves - I tried to do mine myself and so far so good - ive been surprised at how straight forward most of it is.

The only thing im paying for is the timing belt renewal and thats only because its done 72K miles - im not sure your's needs done after 36K service.

I might end up paying for the brake fluid etc but to be honest after saving money on the oil and filter change, plug change and air filter change, brake pad change by doing them myself i'm not too fussed about paying to get the brake fluid done.

Buy a Haynes manual and give it a go - about 3 months ago I had no idea about cars - im glad I gave it a bash - must have saved easily a hundred pounds - god knows how much ill save over the remaining life of the car.

i've always done the work on my clio, and really happy to know it's done how it should be..... think i have over £3,500 worth or reciepts in 5 years not sure if that's good or bad but always use gen renault parts

the only thing i get a little scared with is cam belts lol, i've had the engine out and replaced the gear box, but just don't like the responsibility of the cam belt.

Would do it myself, however long I plan to keep the car when I come to sell it's nice to see a Stamped history.

I see - im planning on keeping my car until its pretty much run into the ground - Although its not the fastest car I've grown quite attached to it.

Just had the timing belt renewed today after 72K miles and it was £220 - that included the fan belt aswell.

Okay mike your my inspiration I have a Haynes so I might as well use it.
This is what I've got so far

Haynes Manual
Basic Wrench Set
Torx Set

Can someone kindly point me in the direction as to what else I should get, I'm willing to attempt the service myself, thinking now the car cost for £700 I've a mate over the road who owns a garage and will put me right if I go wrong so what have I got to lose?

Heres my list of things to get so far if someone could advise me what I should change for a major service that'd be great.

To Buy:
Trolly Jack
Axel Stands
Argos Impact Wrench (Cuz I'm a lazy focker)
Oil Filter
Oil / 5 Lt
Bosh Spark Plugs
Air Filter

And...?

Im just a newbie to this aswell - im sure other people could give you more help but heres what ive done and what I needed for each bit.

Air filter - only needs a socket set or a ring spanner - 20 minute job once you figure out how to take your air filter out.

Replace disc brakes - this can be done on the jack or with axle stands and a ring spanner and socket set (also threadlock is recommended) - 1 Hour job.

Replace spark plugs - socket set and a magnet - the plugs on my motor are recessed deep and require a very small socket to get into them so I just used the normal socket to loosen them then used the magnet to fish them out - 20 minutes if you have the tools.

Timing belt was replaced to day at the dealer - £220 (including fan belt)

Not tried the oil filter and oil yet but this should be quite simple.

No sure if a trolley jack is 100% necessary - I just use the jack for changing the wheel and the axle stands.

I still have the following to do:

Replace fuel filter
Brake Fluid Renewal
Coolant Renewal
Check Rear Brakes for wear and fix if necessary

After all this is done my car should be fully serviced and in future if it needs done again I'll know how.:D

Ive just taken my time and tackled one of the jobs every weekend or so.

Good Luck

Cheers Mike, I know for a fact the discs are fine as I've just replaced the front pads and suspensions and hubs last week.

There is a problem with the brakes though, as I blead them correctly when I done the front pads, at the time and they were good and stayed sharp for a week now they're crap again and the fluid is turning black like it was before...?
Noticed a excess amount of air in the front right caliper when bleeding but was wondering if it had anything to do with it being closest to the master cylinder hence it gets bled last etc..

Any ideas anyone?
