Garage Flooring

Looking for your thoughts and experiences with garage flooring.

Were moving house soon and getting some flooring down in the garage is top of the list of priorities before it ends up full of stuff.

Plan is to have the ph1 at home in the garage for working on so must be able to withstand a jack and axle stands.

One of the main companies that stands out is mototile, priced up their 7mm thick mid grey recycled coin top. Also interested in costco's stuff if anyone has experience

If you're looking at any rubber flooring as well, I bought a roll and it had this awful smell of chemicals that I dont think is healthy be near for longer than 5 seconds, just to bare in mind!

Are you sealing the floor?

Epoxy resin, either diy it or find a local flooring place to come do it.

It’ll last and look good, if it’s not a great finish to start with a flooring co will come polish it up before applying the stuff.

I used concrete sealer, probably not what the OP is after

I bought some moto-tile rubber tiles which looked great once laid. However they stained within a few weeks.

if I was doing it again I’d either go for the cheap option and paint the floor or put ceramic tiles down if I wanted to be posh.

I’ve got some of the coin pattern stuff and it’s held up well to the abuse over the last few years.
Only issue I’ve had is you get any solvents on it they will make it sticky.

Priced the garage style workshop 7mm tiles, coming in at £930 for the area I need. Bit more than I was planning unfortunately
Mototile was £540
Costco around £730

I fitted the tiles in December and after only a couple of weeks of winter dirt and grime dripping off the tyre's the tiles became stained where the wheels sat.

I did try cleaning the tiles as soon as I noticed the stains but I couldn't shift them..

Epoxy painted mine at start of Covid banter. Floorsaver site, about 120 all in and a weekend of lashing it all on. Super clean, super easy to apply and no more dust!

More about covering up my 30 year old wooden garage doors that desperately need replacing. Having said that, if your garage doors are fairly airtight then this stuff does help keep heat out (if the doors get direct sunlight for long periods) and warmth in during winter. Used the foil tape from Screwfix too. Applied it used a suitable spray on glue. Didn’t take long but sharpens it up a bit

Next up will be some lovely electric doors. One thing at a time though as they’re so expensive, especially needing two 😂

It’s a fair chunk but they do come with a long warranty and are a high quality product. Depends on what your expectations are really.

I’m sure the Mototile ones will do the job well too, they look smart.

Same yeah, once got some spare moolah Ill get electric roller doors but for now don't really need em.

Will try that insulation stuff, mainly cos occasionally my bro and I will sup some beers in there

It 100% scores some man cave points. I’m hoping to sort out a bar/sofa/TV/racing sim, on the side that’s not used by the car.

Etcher, cleaner, primer and 2 coats of epoxy resin paint

I have a mix of Mototile recycled and standard tiles, they are great and you wouldn't even tell which ones are recycled.

The garage is now a lot better insulated and easier on the feet when walking around / more comfortable if I need to sit/kneel down.
Overall more expensive than paint but in my opinion worth it for the benefits.

Had this dilemma earlier in year and went for old office carpet tiles for 50p each, hardly any wear, like new many of them, lots of places sell on ebay and two cans of spray from toolstation to stick down. Been really good so far and can jack up on them fine. Best thing has been when I spilt tin of paint just took the two tiles up threw them in the bin and stuck two more down.

Screwfix budget range floor paint and Halfords floor tiles at the back where my bench is. Door insulation was off Amazon. I generally repaint the floor every 5-6 years or so and I use spare rubber tiles for jacking etc.

Car sits on 4 carpet tiles and I’ve added a wide rubber mat across the entrance to stop any slips when my feet are wet and catch any crap to save constant sweeping and mopping.

Garage is deceptively big - the Octavia fits with space to spare. No power as we’re looking to move next year and I’m not spending the money on this one.

A few months ago I put down B&Q’s own brand garage floor tiles. They were cheap but initially looked decent. But the ones subjected to heavy traffic have now stretched and there are now areas where the tiles have raised up and won’t lie flat now.

I’m after some recommendations for heavier better quality tiles. BigDug always comes up in searches. Anyone used their tiles?

My bro got a sample and they seem pretty decent quality, price isn’t too bad either.

What’s the perks of this stuff rather then a good 2 part epoxy resins paint?

Gonna use mine as a little tinkering workshop to be fair so was just gonna paint it

Ah, thanks. I read that you could in the spec. But don’t fancy shelling out for a floor that will dent. I’ll stick to the epoxy coating, with maybe the area around my work bench with these tiles.

I make this at work, so will just bang some of that around my work bench, I have it round my Miller at work and it’s great if you drop a cutter or drill as it doesn’t damage it 😂

My plan now is to create a work bench area at the front of the garage and will Likely use these tiles for that area then epoxy paint the ‘car’ workshop area.

I guess if you stood the stands on a board or off cut tile then it wouldn’t damage the floor.

The cheaper hollow backed stuff will be more susceptible to indents from Jack wheels and etc but the solid stuff shouldn’t be too bad.

It’s the interlocking that puts me off. Eyes are drawn to it in the light and if not completely smooth beneath the lugs raise and show even more.

It’s in the region of £1300 to do my space in the higher end stuff which is madness if it starts to stain quickly.

Yet I’m still leaning towards it because it’s easy to go down, can be done in sections where you moved stuff around it therefore not having to completely empty your garage for a couple of days whilst you prep for epoxy and wait for it to cure once you move in. Plus the tiles you could take with and don’t have the fear that epoxy could lift/be scraped and need doing again.
