Gear Box Crunch

  Clio 172 PH2 (Y Reg)
Hi

I have a Clio 172 PH2, and when I put in into 3rd most of the time it crunches going up gears and down gears, and it is now starting to feel wierd in a few other gears.

If pulls well and the clutch doesnt slip.

What would people think the problem is my clutch or gearbox?

If either one of these does any1 know the best place for a recon box, and or shall i go to renault to get the clutch fitted??

Cheers

P.S im a new member and im on my birds laptop to picked a nice pic of her dog hope you like.

1) Don't take it to renault.

Take it to a transmission specialist and let them have a drive, It does sound like the box has had it, do you struggle selecting gears eg: when setting off does it go into the gates ok? if it is fine at going into gears its unlikely to be the clutch.

Try a gear oil change first, cheap and cheerful use 75w-80 GL5 I believe box holds 3.1ltrs, have a search around mate youl find lots on the subject

I like the picture BTW ;)

As Mattjk said, change your oil first, i had this problem and changing my gearbox oil solved it :)

Or engine mount alignment can improve shifts did on mine. Do a search does your car knock accelerating swiftly in 1st?

My 21k gearbox crunches in 2nd, 4th and 5th when cold.

3rd gear is what went on my 172.

Hi

Yes she does knock a lot on 1st i hear the engine mount breaks a lot, my bro changed his and he said his car felt like new for about a month and after that it went back to normal.

Are there any uprated engine mounts available on the market?

I will give her a box oil change and see how it goes, might take it in tomorrow for that doing as i need the rear wheel bearing doing aswel!

Cheers so far.

If i have to get a new/recon box i think im gonna splash out and get myself a quaife diff why not hay Credit Crunch my arse!!!

there mounts look like they could possibly improve engine stability slightly but its very important to position correctly and tighten each mount in sequence with engine as far forward as possible otherwise knocking on acceleration and crunching gears can be exagerated.

Sounds like the synchromesh to me. Learn how to double declutch into 3rd to get some more life out of it. Thats what I had to do with one of my old 306's and worked fine doing that.

sounds like the linkage is slightly out? its also possible to get a bit more shift space firstly by engine mount alignment and secondly fine gear linkage adjustment imo.

i'm convinced its the selector thats the problem combined with crap oil and rushed changes, i've seen that selector heavily worn and or snapped, we got through 2 boxes (second box had 4 rebuilds, would last approx 2000miles) always 3rd went first, our gearbox man fitted an uprated (thicker) selector fork and it was bang on then, 10k miles no bother, and that was on a track car that got bounced off kerbs and it was running silly power too

Where did your man get a thicker selection rod from?, did it shift alot better, I dont think the oe part is upto the job nearly.

no idea where he got the selector from, his work shop is an Aladdin's cave of bits, he fits them all the time to the JB/JC boxes now

Yea, mine does it now and again, maybe its just a reno problem, I'm thinking of maybe lubing the sync up more, so its a bit more free er ?

  Weeman sucks ****
As said before 3rd gear is an issue. Try changing the gearbox oil. Mine was playing up ages ago after a lot of trackwork, seems fine now and it's on 120k *touches wood*

  53 Clio's & counting
A good trick which iv used it all my Clio's is change the gearbox (it must be the right viscosity) and put in Forte diff and gear treatment, trust me this stuff works wonders

The standard selector fork will be fine if you don't rush the gears to much.
Quaife diff good choice.
