Gear Linkages ; What to go for

  Clio 172, Escort RST
My Clio is slowly getting up to scratch but the gear selection leaves little to be desired. While it is not as bad as some Clios out there it is not great either.

The engine mounts seem fine, although the top engine mount could potentially do with changing (a specialist did give them the OK however). Upon changing the gearbox oil the other day I noticed that a rod that supports the main rod going from the gearstick to the selector shaft had a slight amount of play in a bush at the very bottom of the gearbox. It looked something like this in the circled area:

Is it worth me going to Renault to get a new linkage or is there a superior solution out there? Are the quick shift linkages worth considering here?

Furthermore it seems there is a slight amount of play in the 'up and down' motion of the gear lever, just about detectable. Again, will a bush from Renault last another few years or am I best off looking at an upgrade, like the Yanoo mod? If so, which Yanoo one is worth it? I notice he sells a few derivatives.

Cheers as always .

Thank you for the suggestions and keep your experiences coming.

I'd have love to have gone for a PMS kit. While the price would have had me wincing at getting it I have heard that it rattles alot. If it is as bad as people are saying I would probably have to discount it on that reason ; the Clio is a daily driver for me :). While I understand that the PMS kit can make the Clio gear linkage a rifle bolt change do they rattle badly?

Which derivatives of the Yanoo stiff shift are you folks running? With the wear in the rod bush on the gearbox what would you guys do there?

I had a pms shifter in my road going clio 182 for a couple of months then swapped it back to standard.

It would be good in a track car but not for a daily driver.Enjoyed it at first but the rattle and rawness got too much for me.

The yanoo stiff shift is incredible. It isn't a linkage though, it replaces the ball insert in the car. It is amazing. Pretty much bolt action rifle feel to it, dependant on how stiff you like it. It keeps the car oem too.

You can run it for a higher feel with the extended gear leaver from the scenic ( a guy does them in the group buy section ) but I run mine standard and it's amazing.

Great to read this! My Yanoo Stiff Shift 3.0 kit with brass bushes and new gearbox end bush arrived today! The fitting instructions look quite involved though.

Tbh I got a garage to fit mine mate, he said it wasn't the easiest thing as the bushes etc needed cutting to fit and the like. Awesome but of kit, very stiff until it beds in for the first week or so though so don't hate it before you tried it (like I did)
