Gearbox 172

Any recommendations around the West Mids for gearbox experts?

Had a couple of mechanics listen to a whining noise and they say its diff / gearbox and either way the box has gotta come out to see the cause. Rang a few places and best so far is Four Ashes Renault specialists - they quote £300 plus VAT for labour to get box in and out. On top of this will then be costs relating to whatever is causing the problem.

Any other places to try?

He is - I didn't think tho that he rebuilt boxes etc? Assuming that's what it may need!

i know GDI do or did things with gearboxes

On my old 172 it was making weird noises and knocks from the box. Ended up being the slieve on the driveshaft where it connects to the box, it has loads of splines in it that had worn away. May be worth pulling off the passenger driveshaft as the part was only a tenner (they don't list 1 for a 172, but a megane 1 is the same)

What do you charge just to drop box in and out fred?

without a rebuild? ie straight swap?

I don't know what's wrong with it yet - Got a leak and this whine that changes when clutch dipped. Assume it might be a rebuild job but depends on what's found.

How much is rebuild all in?

well depending what's up with the box all in (worst case) with a new clutch off the top of my head is sub £600
