Gearbox noise.

I've read a lot of posts and can't seem to pinpoint what I'm hearing as everyone keeps going on about he diff bearings. Mine is only when the clutch is engaged in gear. Surely if it was the diff it would make noise regardless due to being connected to the driveshafts.
When on the motorway it's easiest to hear (exhaust and induction kit don't help) but diping the clutch the noise goes away.
It's the usual I've had the oil changed which was motul 75w80 plus a genuine input shaft bearing was changed at the same time but I've only noticed it recently (2k miles or so later)
There is also a slight rattle from acceleration but I'm not convinced it's related or gearbox as I thought it was the alternator all this time but that's been changed and the noise is still there too.

That's what I thought. It is virtually brand new. Theres a thread on here I had problems before with it all haha. The input shaft guide snapped and in turn slid up and down between the release bearing and the input shaft bearing destroying both. The box was taken apart, all gears were cleaned with fresh oil and all seemed in order with the relevant bearings replaced along with the clutch and pressure plate. They are all new genuine parts so hopefully it's not anything too bad as I hate taking the box off due to being useless with getting the gear linkage back in place lol.

Far from local, but i know the area well as i spent alot of time there over 5 and a bit years ha, some good country roads to chuck it around lol.

The rattle I mentioned has always been there as far as I know and i have no idea what that is as mentioned. It's never caused a problem and nothing can be felt from it. All pulleys on the cambelt and aux kits were replaced, alternator changed.
The other noise is a constant noise only upon load. If I coast I can hear it slightly and it disappeared on lift off until the engine breaking kicks in then can be heard again. Also it dissappears when the clutch is dropped so I don't think it's anything to do with driveshafts or diff. The noise has only appeared within the last few k I'd imagine. It all runs/feels perfect and tight it's just a noise I don't fancy making something go bang haha.
Yeah quite a few good roads around here they are getting a bit more strict now with certain areas with dispersal orders etc and it's more the bangers they tend to pick on more than the slightly better cars. I just save 90% of it for track now and have a few fast country moments every now and again on roads I know well

Yeah I thought so that's the one I mentioned in the original post, I wasn't sure if there's more than one name for it.
I hear your quite good with boxes yourself. If I take mine out and open it will it go back together relatively easy if I don't pull all of the cogs apart, or will it fall to bits in my hands and be screwed? I'm handy with a spanner and have done engine swaps etc I've just never opened a box up before.

The jc5's are a bit tricky tbh mate and you'll also need some pullers - one of which needs to have very thin jaws to pull the 5th gear off the shaft, the other needs to be an internal bearing puller. You may as well look in the diff as well mate, as I'm seeing a lot that are fucked now internally.

Mine was rattley when clutch pushed, and gradually got louder. New clutch/kit and all sorted.

The jc5's are a bit tricky tbh mate and you'll also need some pullers - one of which needs to have very thin jaws to pull the 5th gear off the shaft, the other needs to be an internal bearing puller. Sorry guys I've been really busy with a refurb house over the last few weeks. I've had my mechanic pull it apart last year and that was down to all the tiny bits so I know I can get hold of all the tools I need if so.
What I'm thinking is getting a second hand one and pulling it to bits and doing all the work on that one, and if I do mess up at least my cars still driveable.
I don't think it's the diff as I'd have thought the noise would be there regardless if it's in gear or not? I'll have a look and likely change the bearing as it's out anyway
Also it doesn't seem to get any worse so I'm not too worried

Diffs can be noisey when loaded up, so in gear and then quiet when 'slack' so out of gear. If your pulling box apart, just do everything!

That's the plan I'm one of those who finds a problem and replace everything I touch on the way.. Bloody cars and bikes cost me a fortune haha!
I didn't know that I would have assumed it wouldn't have died right down in sound due to still being moving at the same speed through the driveshafts. Learn something new every day on here
