Is it worth changing every couple of years? Is it worth doing at a service interval - say the 36k one?
Is it a sod to change in the first place?

I had mine done at 36k service. I think he used Millers which wasnt cheap but definately made a difference and worth doing IMO.

How much was that on top of the service, Mark?

a quick quide for you sir,
1> Jack car up and place on axel stands ** jack the rear up too so the car is level!
2> take the sump key (its the same size for the engine sump)
3> Crack the nut do not undo all the way!
4> Take a bucket or container, then fully remove the nut and drain the oil
5> Once all the oil is out replace the nut and nip it up tight.
6> At the front of the gear box there is a plastic wing nut, remove this it unwinds and can be quite tight!
7> Get a flexable funnel thats will bend into the hole,
8> take the oil and fill the gearbox until it reachs the bottom of the hole! leave for 5 mins so it can sink down then double check
9> Tighten the wing nut back up.
10> Drop the car back down onto level ground, then open the wingnut again and double check its at the bottom of the hole, if not top it up via the little black filler on top of the box!
Job done!
change every 18k in my opinion - 75 / 80's semi synthetic. The JC5 box is bad enough as it is - neglecting oil changes will give your box a shorter life
its acthally not hard to do, i used to drop mine every year, just when i did the usual oil and filter service, renault say 5 years, it proberly fine to leave it that long but as its cheap to buy and easy to change i'd jsut go for it
