Gearbox Thrust Bearing ?

School boy error, something has to go wrong. I left the speedo sender out the Gbox when I swapped a corsa engine :( All had to come back out.

You can see the bearing sitting on the box input shaft here.

Could someone please tell me how vital the long bronze in colour looking bolt..screw...is located on this picture near the drive shaft...to the left of the gearbox. What does it do... is just a locator pin??to guide the box back on to the engine?? or is it actually a bolt that is used to be tightened up on to the engine when they are being joined together!!! If anybody knows please could they let me know and set my mind at ease.... I would be very grateful!

what ever you do dont losen the flange around the input shaft to the box. I did and it spewed all the box oil out over the nice new shiny clutch :(

By moving it i had popped the seal off the back of the flange. Fortunately on a Phase 1 172 box it pushes back in. Apparently with a later box the internals have to be removed. Classic Renault engineering !!!

Ps. My vote goes to Valeo ! But dont put that alignment piece into the crankshaft. That looked like very dodgy practice to me ! I could see it jumping out and dropping into the clutch assembly !

You will see the importance of the bolt when you put the box back on. Allows you to locate the piggin thing while you break your back trying to lift it into place. Feeling strong ???

The pin you see is to guide the box onto the engine, so you have time then to bolt the gearbox up properly,

Have you snapped it or something?

I made a mistake.....I was looking at the wrong parts on the gearbox! I was looking at the dowds or downs.....the long tube washers that sit in the holes where the bolts go through! Could only get two out my old gearbox..the third one got chewed whilst trying to remove it! are these dowds / downs or whatever they are called vital for fitting?? I mean the bolt still goes through the hole and tightens on to the engine?? the box is already on.....can remove it again if needed. But a lot of effort if it isn't needed! cheers for your help!!
