General laptop request

Have got a budget up to £600.
Have been looking at http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-aspire-5742-black-laptop-08702354-pdt.html

To be used for browsing, maybe a bit of word processing and watching dvds etc.
I want the big hdd and large amount of ram (to future proof it a bit)

What do people think? / Should I be looking else where....

It's massively overpowered for what you have said you want, a netbook spec would be ample, however if you want it to do anything graphically intensive bare in mind the laptopbyou have linked to has integrated graphics rather than a separate card so despite the headline i5 processor it will be compromised

After my unexpected failure of the screen on my old laptop after contracting a virus - see attached (ok, I sort of softly tapped it against my head in frustration in trying to clean it again... NOT HEadButTTed it!!) I got a new one of the Dell outlet... You can't spec your own machine,but there is a huge choice - got an i3 processor, 4Gb Ram, 500Gb HD for £349... was scratch and dent, but the laptop is pristine, windows 7 and well fast... it's nice to have a machine that can operate fast enough for it's operating system!

Ah, very good point. Will drop the processor to an i3.

yeah i bought my laptop from the dell outlet

it was labeled scratch and dent but there was only a little mark on it about 2mm

I was going to suggest Dell Outlet store...mate got i5 with HD upgraded screen for just over £500! Its best if you get on there at 3pm as thats when they update it.

The stuff they sell is usually cancelled orders or returned/refurbished, or marked...but as Dink has said...a mark can be minimal.

I rate the vaio's after my GF got one last year... but specification can vary a huge amount. She decided to spec hers up direct from the Sony store and it came to 800 all in (with a fair few options still not ticked). Hers is plenty fast enough (she's doing a computer programming degree) so if your just planning on using it for browsing, dvds and word processing I'm sure one of the entry level vaio's would be more than sufficient.

Can't fault Asus. I've got an Asus Republic of Gamers laptop. G51 RX05. Plays everything I've thrown at it, even Crysis 2. Was thinking on selling it though!
