16v UK Cup Race Car
I just bought this - a 1990’s ex Clio Cup Racer.
This is a genuine UK Clio Cup car, manufactured during week 50 of 1990 as confirmed by an official letter from Renault to one of the previous owners.
Surprisingly (for what was known as a pretty destructive race series) it’s on its original shell, with no signs of accident damage. The car came with a partial history from 1997-2005, and a lot of history from 2005 onwards, but unfortunately nothing relating to its time in the original Clio Cup series in the 1990’s…. so it’s early history is unknown at this point. If anyone has any info on this car’s early life I’d welcome it.
It was registered for the road in 1997, although has minimal miles on the clock as it hasn’t really been used as a road car.
The car has been in the South East since at least 2005, possibly earlier. It was in Kent from 2005-2012 and I connected with the owner from that period. It was already on Weber 45’s by then. He competed it in Sprints and Hillclimbs and did a few track days in it.
In 2012 he sold it to the guy I bought it from, who, like me, is based in Sussex. The car was significantly updated and improved during his ownership (suspension, brakes, gearbox, exhaust, mild aerodynamic improvements, etc), updating it and making it a capable, worthy and fresh race car again. It was used in the MSVT Trophy in 2013 and 2014 and there are several YouTube videos of it in action.
I got it because I fell in love with it as soon as I saw the pictures of it. Who wouldn’t? .
A week after first seeing pictures of the car I viewed it in the flesh and it confirmed that the owner was meticulous…. everything has been done properly, with lots of love, care and attention lavished on it, both by the owner as well as Renault specialists such as Mark Fish and others.
I bought the car because the notion of a seriously well developed ex race car with all the right bits on it appealed to me. Also, I used to race Alfa Romeos against Mark Fish (and his brother Simon) back in the late 80’s and I well remember the first Renault Clio Cup series…. so this car is sort of a blast from the past for me.
I don’t plan to race it - but it won’t be a garage Queen, it’ll get used properly on track regularly.
