Genuine Mk1 Clio Cup Racer 16V Valver

  16v UK Cup Race Car
I just bought this - a 1990’s ex Clio Cup Racer.

This is a genuine UK Clio Cup car, manufactured during week 50 of 1990 as confirmed by an official letter from Renault to one of the previous owners.

Surprisingly (for what was known as a pretty destructive race series) it’s on its original shell, with no signs of accident damage. The car came with a partial history from 1997-2005, and a lot of history from 2005 onwards, but unfortunately nothing relating to its time in the original Clio Cup series in the 1990’s…. so it’s early history is unknown at this point. If anyone has any info on this car’s early life I’d welcome it.

It was registered for the road in 1997, although has minimal miles on the clock as it hasn’t really been used as a road car.

The car has been in the South East since at least 2005, possibly earlier. It was in Kent from 2005-2012 and I connected with the owner from that period. It was already on Weber 45’s by then. He competed it in Sprints and Hillclimbs and did a few track days in it.

In 2012 he sold it to the guy I bought it from, who, like me, is based in Sussex. The car was significantly updated and improved during his ownership (suspension, brakes, gearbox, exhaust, mild aerodynamic improvements, etc), updating it and making it a capable, worthy and fresh race car again. It was used in the MSVT Trophy in 2013 and 2014 and there are several YouTube videos of it in action.

I got it because I fell in love with it as soon as I saw the pictures of it. Who wouldn’t? :).

A week after first seeing pictures of the car I viewed it in the flesh and it confirmed that the owner was meticulous…. everything has been done properly, with lots of love, care and attention lavished on it, both by the owner as well as Renault specialists such as Mark Fish and others.

I bought the car because the notion of a seriously well developed ex race car with all the right bits on it appealed to me. Also, I used to race Alfa Romeos against Mark Fish (and his brother Simon) back in the late 80’s and I well remember the first Renault Clio Cup series…. so this car is sort of a blast from the past for me.

I don’t plan to race it - but it won’t be a garage Queen, it’ll get used properly on track regularly.

Spec:
  • Brookes Motorsport Clio 1.8 16v engine on twin Weber 45 DCOE’s. Several RR printouts showing 162bhp.
  • Original ‘Devil’ cage, plus harness bar on rear arches
  • Custom AST remote reservoir coilovers on modified rear beam with camber and castor adjustment
  • Lightweight, custom moulded fibreglass bonnet (also have the original)
  • Custom moulded fibreglass headlight blanks (the elf logo on the NS is in fact vented as an air duct to the oil cooler)
  • Custom moulded carbon door cards
  • Custom lowered radiator
  • Mocal oil cooler
  • Odyssey lightweight race battery
  • OMP strut brace
  • Rebuilt Gearbox
  • Edwards Motorsport custom fabricated exhaust (the full system, from manifold to tip)
  • Plumbed in MSA extinguisher
  • Wilwood calipers
  • Speedlines with Dunlop slicks
..plus lots and lots of other tasty race-spec stuff.

Absolutely! I go all over the place - Cadwell, Oulton, Donington, Bedford, Brands, Pembrey, Thruxton, Combe etc... PM me when you're up and running again.

After I've checked the car over thoroughly I may get to Brands on 10th/11th April if I can fit it in with work, which will be its first outing in my ownership.

Looks lovely. Whats the yellow marker for on the speedo?

It's a marker for pit lane max speed. It's just fluoro tape, so I will remove it shortly. But useful when the car was competing in the MSVT Trophy.. driver changes and all that. :yum:

Wasnt sure if it was like a 1st gear limiter marker so you knew if you could safely shift down

Great car. We do love the Clio Cup cars in all it's guises, having run several ourselves over the years. Do keep the dampers serviced. We are the official UK service centre and distribution. Our factory trained technitions use only genuine AST parts.

Thought I'd provide some background to my track/race obsession.. apologies for some of the non-Renault content(!)

The first of my Monaco Blue 172’s... I bought this from @imprezaworks
A great car that unfortunately suffered an off at Oulton a year ago. Although only panel damage it was uneconomical to repair. It’s in the process of being broken for parts. Previous MSVT Trackday Trophy Class winning car actually. Shell, engine, gearbox, exhaust, 182 manifold and chipped ECU/key, UCH, FIA extinguisher, FIA battery cut-out, etc all still here if anyone needs parts...

As the above Monaco Blue 172 was damaged, I bought another one :tongueout:
This is a truly lovely car. The previous owner had owned it since just 35k miles and absolutely cherished it. Although I’ve stripped the interior out and transferred many of the components over from the previous 172 (coilovers, brakes, seat, harness, other bits) it is still a lovely condition car.

It’s still being used regularly on track, I suppose I need to decide whether to keep it or sell it now that I have the Cup Racer….. dunno. Maybe I’ll keep both:smile:

My Porsche 911 (996)... had this 3 years and did at least 1/2 dozen track days in it.
