Getting the itch to get a 172/182 - advice?

  Clio 182FF
Greetings!

Since joining this humble place I've been tinkering with my Clio MK2 1.2 but seeing all the 172/182's is really making me want to make the upgrade!

Do I sit tight for a bit longer and wait for the new Clio 200 to launch (pushing prices down on the 172/182's maybe), trade mine in for one or just keep what I have?

The only reason I'm scared of trading my current one in is because it has been so damn reliable and if I get a 172/182 as my main car what if it breaks :(

Any suggestions?

If you don't have the money, dont buy it. At the end of the day its just a car and ive spent almost 2500£ on it :F

New and used cars are a lottery with regard to buying them.

Some will need gentle maintenance, others will cause no end of grief.

On the whole (although they all rattle) There generally reliable with only wear and tear items being replaced.

Man up and buy one

Imo the new 200 won't push prices of the 172/182 down much (if at all) it will push the price of the 197 down though.

Also depends alot on your NCB and age. I wouldnt really approach a 172/182 until your 21 with 2 YNCB as a minimum or you will be paying above the odds for insurance!

Put some wheels on your dynamique, lower it and colour code. Just dont go the route of exhaust, induction, remap, coilover due to the costs and save for the greater cause :)

I'm 26 this year and have 7 years no claims so insurance should be pretty reasonable. I'm not affraid to buy one and keep the current Clio too I'm just worried about buying a dud tbh as my first Clio was a nightmare.

I must confess I think i'm leaning towards a 172 or 172 cup at the moment - what are the chances of getting one reasonably unmodded/factory spec.

With performance cars you generally need at least basic knowledge of how they work, otherwise you'll end up driving a dangerous car without knowing it.

Agree'd! 172/182 are rock bottom anyway. a 55plate is now worth 5k max...For a minter.

You been out or driven any RS Clio's? I'm from around Norwich if you want to take my 182 for a quick drive on one of my many Private Runways ;)

I might take you up on that! I havn't tried one yet but have seen a fair few on my travels (I'm an estate agent for my sins - but a cool one who's nice). I think I would probably get a 172 but wouldn't write a 182 off. My current Clio is worth around £2000 traded in so finding a further £3000 shouldn't be a drama if I did it that way.

You can still get some fussy b*****d insurers out there, though. I got my 182 about 2 weeks before my 30th and I was amazed at the number of insurers who wouldn't touch me until I was 30.

You see. When I reached that magical day, all the previous bad driving and mistakes of the previous 13 years simply vanished into thin air. f**king muppets.

thats what I was thinking too, it's just a face lift with a couple of minor tweeks I understand? I like it though, especially in green (yeah yeah I know lol)

I'm only a year older than you and i bought my 172 as my first car so i wouldn't stress about it too much. i did my research and this forum was incredible for that. Buy one, I love mine. i paid £3500 for an 02 172 with 45k miles. It's mint and was the 4th or 5th one i drove so just shop around. Mine did come with a k-tec steakth and clifford alarm fitted too.
Already been on the k-tec site buying bit's and bobs.

Ok so where is there best place to start looking? Renault, Auto trader doesn't seem to have much on at the moment!

I think I 182 is just outside my budget unless I get one with high mileage. I was hoping to get something around the 40k mark for £4000-£5000.

Could get lucky on Pistonheads if you're willing to travel...... 172 and 182 are completely different to drive I MO as the clutch feel so diffeent well in the 172 's I've driven it does anyway,

Drop me a PM and I can arrange to meet you when I'm free and can go for a drive
