Going from 172 to 182 and beyond

  RSi 97, Sport 04
Hi guys, I would like to know if it's possible to upgrade my 172 engine to 182. I ask that because here in my country (Colombia) there are only 20 Clio Sport 172 and no 182, so I want to take mine a little beyond. I just want to make if faster without installing any turbo kit.

So far slight changes have been made. Yesterday the car registered 133whp and today we mounted the K&N Apollo kit (showing a considerable sound change). I will take the car to the dyno back next Friday to see if there's any change regarding the whp, which I hope.

I really appreciate all your comments regarding not only my projects (I'll tell you about my RSi soon) but also my use of English. Thanks a lot for your time!!!

I'm in Brazil and we didn't get the RS Clios. I had to build my own, importing parts, paying 121% tax, etc...

Some parts I got for the engine:
- Catcams 421
- Wossner forged 84mm pistons (12.6:1 CR)
- KTR forged rods
- Formula Renault inlet manifold
- Larger throttle body with TB spacer
- Full custom 2.5" exhaust
- Standalone ECU
- Custom carbon fiber large airbox with ITG Maxogen foam filter and cold air intake from behind the headlight (where the battery would be normally)
- The car runs on 100% ethanol
- Custom 4-2-1 stainless steel exhaust manifold, equalized runners.
- Port matched head/inlets, ported and polished

The car isn't done yet but should be way faster than a standard 182. As the engine is not the only important part of the car, the first thing I did (and you should do) was upgrade all bushings to Powerflex polyurethane units, larger swaybars, KW Variant 2 Inoxline Coilovers, KTR brake lines, rear Scenic MK1 brakes (274mm discs), KTR alloy top suspension mounts, and some other things... And I don't have power steering, air conditioner, ABS, and other superfluous parts. It was easier for me to get the car extremely light as I started with a brazilian 820kg 1.0 16v base model Clio Authentique MK2 PH2, and now with the RS seats, F4R, and all the other stuff it still weights less than 910kg.

Good to see other South American RS enthusiasts here, we're very rare. I still need the full RS body kit (2 bumpers, 2 wings and 2 skirts) but the parts with taxes and shipping will get here for more than 3.5k pounds so I'm still debating on what to do.

Later,
Bruno

You can upgrade the engine mate, but there's very little point.

I'm sorry to say that the induction kit will make no difference at all to hp. In fact, you'll probably have less.

The best things to do are:
Matched inlets
Remap
Clio v6 airbox

Could you not order it from your local dealer? Must work out cheaper than £3500!

Bloody hell, that must have cost a fare bit, mostly in shipping and import taxes.lol

@Ordones , Clio RS range was sold in Mexico, have you tried importing from there, my country has free trade agreements with yours.

I have a 172 with 182 exhaust mani, so in practical terms, I have a 182 :p

No point in changing the whole engine TBH. only the crank is different and some other bits.

surely at that altitude you're best off just turbocharging, even boosting up to our air pressure would be a big increase. Even with standard compression you should be able to double your current power (750mb abs to 1500mb abs)

Thanks a lot for your kind advice, guys. I have thought about turbocharging it but the fact that the spare parts can cost an arm and a leg here prevents me form doing so. I have had real trouble trying to find the clutch kit and even the rear brake discs (I had to imprt them!!!). Anyway, I'll take the car to the dyno this weekend so I find out what the gain from using the K&N kit is. After that, I'll consider further actions like programming the car or something like that. Is there any chip you can get in order to increase my 172's performance?

Jack, can you tell me how to get those items? What about the remapping? To what extenet would it improve the performance?
